Sinopse

“Fascinating” stories of real-life people and events that inspired the author of the classic adventure novel Robinson Crusoe (Historical Novel Society).   This book looks at some of the stories that inspired Daniel Defoe, author of Robinson Crusoe—stories of bravery, determination, and good fortune, as well as human negligence, sheer stupidity, and bad luck. In addition to an overview of Defoe’s life and his monumentally successful novel, it also considers some of the reasons why people found themselves cast away—as a result of being wrecked, abandoned as a punishment, or marooned by pirates, or even out of deliberate choice.   Major hurricanes in the eighteenth century causing huge damage to shipping and loss of life are also covered, along with catastrophes when ships were lost, and astonishing tales of survival in the face of adversity—down in the Falklands, in the Caribbean, and off the coast of Australia. It looks at how being cast away brings out the best in some—and in others the very worst. And it examines perhaps the most astonishing story of them all—sixty slaves abandoned on a desolate treeless island in the Indian Ocean and left there for fifteen years, some of whom survived against all odds.

Lupus is a chronic autoimmune disease that can affect nearly every organ and tissue in the body. It occurs when the immune system, which is meant to protect the body from foreign invaders like bacteria and viruses, mistakenly attacks healthy tissues. This malfunction leads to inflammation and damage in various parts of the body, including the skin, joints, kidneys, heart, and lungs. The unpredictable nature of lupus, with periods of flare-ups followed by remissions, makes it particularly difficult to diagnose and manage.
Understanding lupus is critical because, despite its widespread prevalence, many people are still unaware of its complexities. The disease often manifests in diverse ways, ranging from mild symptoms to life-threatening conditions. Because lupus shares symptoms with other diseases, it can be challenging to diagnose in its early stages. This makes awareness and early recognition essential for effective management and treatment.

The New York Times bestselling author takes readers on “a fascinating journey into the trenches of crime [investigation]”—now revised and updated (Lowell Cauffiel, New York Times bestselling author).A body stuffed in a car trunk swallowed by the swirling, muddy waters of the Missouri River. A hiker brutally murdered, then thrown off a steep embankment in a remote mountain range. A devious killer who hid his wife’s body under a thick cement patio. For investigators, the story is often the same: they know a murder took place, they may even know who did it; but without key evidence, or a body, pursuing a conviction is nearly impossible. That’s when they call NecroSearch International, a brain trust of the nation’s top scientists in a wide variety of fields, who along with law enforcement, use the latest technology and field techniques to locate clandestine graves and hidden secrets to solve “unsolvable” crimes. In No Stone Unturned, Steve Jackson—who became a member of NecroSearch International in 2015—gives a captivating, insider’s look into a realm of crime investigation of which few people are aware. “The book covers the group’s quirky beginnings and digs into its most important cases suspensefully; Jackson’s sharp eye misses nothing in the painstakingly rendered details. A must-have for true crime fans, it should also be of great interest to anyone fascinated with the practical applications of science.”—Publishers Weekly (starred review)“Delves into cases that would make good novels, but they’re real. Furthermore, he describes a group of uncommon people performing uncommon tasks, and he does it with respect, accuracy and genuine style.”—Ron Franscell, bestselling author of Alice & Gerald: A Homicidal Love Story

Christopher A. Roosa grew up the eldest son of Apollo 14 astronaut and command module pilot Stuart A. Roosa. As a child of the space program, Christopher had a ringside seat at the dinner table of one of twenty-four Americans who had either entered lunar orbit or landed on the moon. The first book written by an offspring of an Apollo astronaut to focus on growing up in that era, Son of Apollo tells the inside story of the life of his father, a man who had a remarkable career despite always believing his air force career was "off-track," from his initial application to the service to his removal from the prime crew of Apollo 13 and his subsequent assignment to Apollo 14. During the Apollo 13 mission and recovery, Stuart played an integral role in developing the procedures to return the crew to Earth safely. The focus—and the pressure—of the entire Apollo program then shifted to the Apollo 14 mission. If the Apollo program was to continue, Stuart and the Apollo 14 crew would need to get safely to the moon, land, and return.

In writing about his father's career, Christopher Roosa also shows us a familial side of the Apollo experience, from the daily struggles of growing up in the shadow of a father who was necessarily away in training most of the year to the expectations involved in being an astronaut's son.
