Summary

The groundbreaking invention of college football metrics that consistently explain game results and accurately value teams for their quality of play.  Lies, Damned Lies and Statistics presents the Relative Performance Grading (RPG) system of statistical measures, which ends all arguments over how good college football teams are relative to one another. Using modern analytics and a dash of ingenious reasoning, Mike Nemeth exposes the need for, and then invents, a new set of statistical measures to explain how and why one team wins and another loses a college football game. The new statistics assign a numerical grade to the playing performances of both winners and losers, just as a student receives a numerical grade on a school test. The grades in this RPG system replace won/lost records and differentiate well-played wins from ugly wins and well-played losses from ugly losses. RPG accurately ranks college football teams according to how well they’ve played the game, i.e. how good a team they are (and, NOT how good their record appears to be).

    The Rules in Practice 2025-2028...

Every four years the Racing Rules of Sailing are updated following the Olympics. To help the sailor, World Sailing labels important changes with marginal markings. For the new rules coming into force on 1st January 2025 there are quite a lot of marginal markings: - A third of the Definitions are marked, including Sail the Course, Mark-Room, Obstruction and Continuing Obstruction; - Nearly a third of the rules in Part 2 (When Boats Meet) are marked, including Avoiding Contact, Mark-Room, Room to Pass an Obstruction; - All of the rules in Part 5 (Protests, Redress, Hearings, Misconduct and Appeals) are marked. That's quite a lot of changes! You need a new set of rules and, to understand the implications of the changes, you need a guide to them. Rules in Practice has been the best-selling guide to the racing rules of sailing for the last 40 years. Now, in its 11th edition, it has been updated for (and contains in full) the 2025-2028 Racing Rules of Sailing. To begin, Rules in Practice describes the latest rule changes and their implications for sailors. The book then covers the fundamental rules that always apply to sailors along with a detailed look at the rules around luffing and keeping clear – which were an eye-opener to many sailors when they were first published in the last edition. As always, throughout the book, the emphasis is on the practical impact on you as a sailor, rather than a theoretical discussion of the rules themselves. This is brought to life in the rest of the book, which takes you around the racecourse, from start to finish, through the key situations that frequently occur showing, from the point of view of each boat in turn, what you may, must or must not do. (Other rules guides take you through the rules in order which is just not how you come across them on the racecourse.) You don't have to know all the rules off by heart, but you do need to know your rights and obligations on the water – the rules can be looked up afterwards. This knowledge will build your confidence while racing and enable you to make the most of opportunities when they arise. Colour diagrams throughout ensure concepts are easily understood. If you are going to buy one rule book – make it this one!

Murray's History of Chess is regarded as the most authoritative and most comprehensive history of the game. Murray's aim is threefold: to present as complete a record as is possible of the varieties of chess that exist or have existed in different parts of the world; to investigate the ultimate origin of these games and the circumstances of the invention of chess; and to trace the development of the modern European game from the first appearance of its ancestor, the Indian chaturanga, in the beginning of the 7th century. The first part of the book describes the history of the Asiatic varieties of chess, the Arabic and Persian literature on chess, and the theory and practice of the game of shatranj. The second part is concerned with chess in Europe in the Middle Ages, its role in literature and in the moralities, and with medieval chess problems, leading up to the beginning of modern chess and the history of the modern game through to the 19th century.

At age twenty, Thomas Dekker was already earning €100,000 a year—as an amateur bike racer. The next year, he turned pro and his salary quadrupled then rose again to €900,000 as he established his position as a super-domestique among Europe's wealthiest superteams. The sport world marveled at Dekker's rise as the young racer set his ambitions on capturing cycling's biggest prizes for himself. Before long, though, Dekker found himself corrupted by money, dazzled by fame, and cracking under the relentless pressure to perform at a superhuman level. In his tell-all book Descent: My Epic Fall from Cycling Superstardom to Doping Dead End, Dekker reveals a sordid way of life full of blood bags, drugs, prostitutes, and money. Descent tells the story of a years-long bender that exposes the brutal truth of his life as a professional cyclist. And Dekker is not alone; he names those who fell with him and those who aided in his downfall. In Descent, we take an unflinching look at the European peloton as it roars through its modern boom years—the height of the EPO era—and what we see is shocking. You won't be able to turn away from this compelling book about one man's rise, fall, and redemption and what his story reveals about professional sports.

Harry, an incorrigible, engaging and dapper biscuit salesman in his forties, ex-Army and the City, becomes the unlikely angling companion of young Tony, the love-struck, shy 19-year-old accountant who is courting his step-daughter.

Throughout the 1960s, this unique fishing friendship is cemented via a series of largely nocturnal fishing jaunts across London, Essex then further afield, to ponds, gravel pits and rivers.

As mods and rockers hit the scene, Harry and Tony set off at first on buses, then on a scooter and later, more luxuriously, in Tony's battered green Ford. With huge excitement and more than their share of mayhem and mishap, they cast their lines wherever fish are to be found (or not, as the case may be!)
At times touching, at times bawdy, always amusing – this is a book not just for anglers but for anyone who enjoys a finely-told story.
