Sinopsis

A devastating collection exploring the wake of mankind’s greatest conflict World War II exerted a psychic toll on Europe that is still evident today. The Pegnitz Junction is Mavis Gallant’s look at how Europe handles that collective pain. In the title novella of this sharply written collection, a girl rides the train with her boyfriend and his son in postwar Europe. Onboard, she encounters all manner of personalities, each person burdened by the weight of what he or she has just experienced, openly bleeding from the emotional wounds of a terrifying global conflict. A wife must come to terms with her husband’s mistakes and find reconciliation in herself as she meets the refugee he had an affair with. A soldier must reintegrate himself into civilian life, no matter how difficult it is. An unlikely friendship between an actress and a police commissioner begins to form. No matter where or when Gallant’s stories are set, each one is a small enchantment, anchored by the insights of a master of her craft.

These stories have the virtue of taking the everyday lives of gay Trinidadian men utterly for granted in their searches for adventure, pleasure, self-realisation, loving contact and sex. Written with a sharpness of perception and in a variety of engaging personal voices, these narratives find room for humour, tragic haircuts, and a connection between tattoos and terrible poetry. But they also acknowledge very real fears in a society where there is still prejudice, discrimination and homophobic violence. The narrator of several of these pieces is a writer who wants to focus on the pleasures and inner dramas of these lives as the truth about gay experience. But there are also the stories of brutal murders reported with coy innuendo in the press. If he is tempted to see his lovers as characters in a witty fiction of manners, is this the novel that can be written in Trinidad? And since this is Trinidad, could the conflicted, self-hating Dorian really be a serial killer? But then when one of Bagoo's writer narrators unwittingly alarms his writing buddies by the freedom of his gothic imagination, who knows what might be true. Not for nothing does the author include the singer Kate Bush with her Wuthering Heights in his acknowledgements. Bagoo's stories offer a witty and incisive portrait of contemporary Trinidad in all its intersections of race, class and gender politics. Not least, they have a strong sense of place – Bagoo's gay Woodbrook offers a fine sequel to V.S. Naipaul's Woodbrook in his classic Miguel Street.

Flying beasties, swimming beasties, creepy crawly leggy beasties – you’ll find them all in this delightfully suspenseful, subtly spine-tingling collection of three short stories written by the illustrious H.G. Wells. Carefully curated from Wells’s more than 30 short stories, the selections you’ll hear in this volume are: In the Avu Observatory, The Valley of Spiders, and The Sea Raiders.
H.G. Wells, perhaps best known for science fiction masterpieces such as The Time Machine and The War of the Worlds, wrote across many genres including satire, history, and social commentary. In the early 1900s, Wells published The Country of the Blind and Other Short Stories which showcased his talent with the short form in science fiction, the spiritual realm, the human condition, and creepy occurrences in the seemingly "real" world. The stories in this volume are of the latter sort – just hair-raising enough that after listening to them you may look twice when something catches your eye from the sky above you, in the water around you, or on the ground beneath your feet.

A storyteller in the very best southern tradition, Lee Smith pens unexpected plots vibrant with luminous prose. Her powerful short stories in Me and My Baby View the Eclipse capture those extraordinary moments in everyday life when greatness and tragedy shimmer through the surface. This collection was chosen as a New York Times Notable Book of the Year. Richly satisfying, each tale portrays ordinary people meeting trouble head on with courage and compassion: a teenaged girl coping with her father's nervous breakdown, a housewife filling her humdrum days with an eccentric lover, and a single mother struggling to hang onto her wayward son. With narrators Linda Stephens' and Tom Stechschulte's brilliant performances, these lyrical stories-made to be read aloud-will linger long in your memory. The collection includes: Bob, a Dog; Mom; Life on the Moon; Tongues of Fire; Dreamers; The Interpretation of Dreams; Desire on Domino Island; Intensive Care; and Me and My Baby View the Eclipse.
