Sinopsis

Preface by Paola Severini Melograni
Translation into English by Ferruccio Bruno
I always thought about my son as a delicate flower that needs to be loved, protected and cared for, and that's what I intend to do as long as I'm breathing. But I also know this is not enough. A flower, tenacious as it may be, could hardly survive on its own. The wind will batter it, dispersing its petals. The heat will wither it and the chill of the night will freeze-burn it. Eventually, weed will choke it out. If, on the other hand, it grows surrounded by other flowers, different in form and colours, its beauty and fragrance would be enhanced by their presence. Not only that; its flower friends will form a barrier around it, preventing weeds and inclemencies from withering it. That's the purpose of this book: to encourage those who, like me, have the future of these “special children” at heart, so that a flowerbed of solidarity may blossom around them, helping them to face the hardest challenges of life.

In his works, Hopper poetically expressed the solitude of man confronted to the American way of life as it developed in the 1920s. Inspired by the movies and particularly by the various camera angles and attitudes of characters, his paintings expose the alienation of mass culture. Created using cold colours and inhabited by anonymous characters, Hopper’s paintings also symbolically reflect the Great Depression.
Through a series of different reproductions (etchings, watercolours, and oil-on-canvas paintings), as well as thematic and artistic analysis, the author sheds new light on the enigmatic and tortured world of this outstanding figure.

The stories in this here anthology may in fact be true wild tales I've absorbed over time. Perhaps drenched with generous hyperbole? I'll let you decide.

As one of the founding members of the seminal punk band Angry Samoans, Gregg Turner has seen his fair share of weird shit. From his time at Creem Magazine in the 1970s and '80s to the formation of the Angry Samoans in Los Angeles, and all the travels, trials, and tribulations that occurred after, Turner takes us through a wild ride of stories he's heard, stories he's lived, and some he may or may not have made up.

The director’s-cut screenplay of the film starring Anna Paquin from the Oscar-winning writer and director of Manchester by the Sea.   This stirring drama by the Academy Award–winning director, playwright, and screenwriter Kenneth Lonergan was called “a film of rare beauty and shocking gravity” by Rolling Stone. Delayed for four years in post-production, the film was finally released in 2011, with a director’s cut following on DVD in 2012. This edition includes the scripts of the full director’s cut, along with an introduction and key tie-in art.  Margaret is the story of a Manhattan teenager whose life is profoundly altered after witnessing a terrible accident. It is the extraordinary journey of an emotional teen who abides by her moral code and wants to set things right, but whose innocent ideals come crashing against the harsh realities of the adult world. It is a story of youth, love, the consequences of mistakes, and the fundamental questions of morality as faced by a teenager in an extraordinary situation.   “A triumph . . . the sort of ambitious American storytelling you find too rarely at the movies.” —Chicago Tribune   “Extraordinarily ambitious . . . Lonergan has as much on his mind as a contemporary novelist such as Don DeLillo or Jonathan Franzen.”—Time   “Arguably the most important American playwright of the last twenty years.” —The New York Times

The story of the makeup artist who changed the film industry—and the world of modern cosmetics. Includes photos.   When Polish wigmaker and cosmetician Max Factor arrived in Los Angeles at the dawn of the motion picture industry, “make-up” had been associated only with stage performers and ladies of the oldest profession. Appalled by the garish paints worn by actors, Factor introduced the first “flexible” greasepaint for film in 1914. With a few careful brush strokes, a lot of innovation, and the kind of luck that can happen only in Hollywood, Max Factor changed the meaning of glamour. His innovations can be experienced in every tube of lipstick, palette of eye shadow, and bottle of nail lacquer used today.    Join author Erika Thomas as she reveals the makeup guru's expert beauty tips and the story of how he created the most iconic golden-era looks that are as relevant today as they were nearly a century ago.
