Sinopse

Reveals a complex new portrait of John Brown, radical abolitionist and leader of the 1859 raid on Harper's FerryJohn Brown is usually remembered as a terrorist whose unbridled hatred of slavery drove him to the ill-fated raid on Harper's Ferry, Virginia, in 1859. Tried and executed for seizing the arsenal and attempting to spur a liberation movement among the slaves, Brown was the ultimate cause celebre for a country on the brink of civil war.“Fire from the Midst of You” situates Brown within the religious and social context of a nation steeped in racism, showing his roots in Puritan abolitionism. DeCaro explores Brown's unusual family heritage as well as his business and personal losses, retracing his path to the Southern gallows. In contrast to the popular image of Brown as a violent fanatic, DeCaro contextualizes Brown's actions, emphasizing the intensely religious nature of the antebellum US in which he lived. He articulates the nature of Brown's radical faith and shows that, when viewed in the context of his times, he was not the religious fanatic that many have understood him to be. DeCaro calls Brown a “Protestant saint”—an imperfect believer seeking to realize his own perceived calling in divine providence. In line with the post-millennial theology of his day, Brown understood God as working through mankind and the church to renew and revive sinful humanity. He read the Bible not only as God's word, but as God's word to John Brown. DeCaro traces Brown's life and development to show how by forging faith as a radical weapon, Brown forced the entire nation to a point of crisis.“Fire from the Midst of You” defies the standard narrative with a new reading of John Brown. Here is the man that the preeminent Black scholar W.E.B. Du Bois called a "mighty warning" and the one Malcolm X called “a real white liberal.”

My Secret Life, the anonymously written erotic memoirs of a Victorian English gentleman who refers to himself simply as 'Walter' is one of the most idiosyncratic and prurient books ever written. In this vast autobiographical confessional the author recounts, in meticulous detail, his sexual exploits throughout the course of a life devoted entirely to the pursuit of carnal pleasure. Through this compelling exploration of the author's sexual behaviour we are left with a uniquely entertaining insight into life behind the closed doors of Victorian society. My Secret Life is funny, sorrowful, suspenseful, compulsively readable, obscene, titillating, exciting and erotic...in it we are privy to the thoughts, emotions and memories of one of the most unusual, unsung and colourful English eccentrics of the Victorian era.

Now, for the first time, the complete unabridged version of this unique text is being narrated and scored by film composer Dominic Crawford Collins as an 'audiofilm' (an audiobook in which the emotional landscape is explored through the music score). Each chapter of My Secret Life will be released at monthly intervals over the next ten to fifteen years culminating in what is likely to become the longest audio book ever to be produced.

Standing at the podium, Victor Villaseñor looked at the group of educators amassed before him, and his mind flooded with childhood memories of humiliation and abuse at the hands of his teachers. He became enraged. With a pounding heart, he began to speak of these incidents. When he was through, to his great disbelief he received a standing ovation. Many in the audience could not contain their own tears. So begins the passionate, touching memoir of Victor Villaseñor. Highly gifted and imaginative as a child, Villaseñor coped with an untreated learning disability (he was finally diagnosed, at the age of forty-four, with extreme dyslexia) and the frustration of growing up Latino in an English-only American school in the 1940s. Despite teachers who beat him because he could not speak English, Villaseñor clung to his dream of one day becoming a writer. He is now considered one of the premier writers of our time.

'I've never met Danny Finkelstein but I think I'm in love with him. His book is such good company – sane, intelligent and witty. He deals with serious subjects in an immensely readable way … If I'm asked to nominate my book of the year, this will be it' WENDY COPE
Writing on everything from a defence of suburban life and moderate politics to big ideas and pop culture, Daniel Finkelstein is one of the UK’s most entertaining and widely read columnists.
This collection brings together Finkelstein’s greatest writings from The Times, ranging from the personal – with his articles on growing up Jewish in Hendon Central and on the deaths of both of his parents – to the political, with columns on how to predict elections, the way political science showed us Ed Miliband was on his way to defeat, and why the base rate of coups meant Jeremy Corbyn wouldn’t be ousted before an election.
Wry, informed and often brilliantly funny, these pieces zip between Walt Disney, Hilary Clinton, David Bowie, Margaret Thatcher, Clement Attlee and Muhammed Ali. They make arguments about football, assisted dying, the art of becoming Prime Minister and the musical Hamilton. Cutting through the chatter to get to the centre of politics and culture, this varied and stimulating book gives an eclectic insight into the biggest conversations of the modern day. Everything is here. In moderation of course.
As a Sunday Times bestselling author, Finkelstein's collection of writings is a testament to his literary prowess and popularity. His autobiography-like pieces, filled with personal anecdotes and social commentary, are a must-read for anyone interested in the intersection of politics and culture.
For fans of Rory Stewart (The Marches), Philippe Sands (The Ratline), Andrew O'Hagan (A Night Out with Robert Burns), Colm Tóibín (The Master), and Sathnam Sanghera (The Boy with the Topknot).

A collection of essays illuminating the historic Polish philosopher, economist, and activist’s tremendous contributions to revolutionary struggle. Rosa Luxemburg, brilliant early twentieth century German revolutionary, comes alive in a rich set of essays on her life, ideas, and lasting influence. The essays deal not only with her remarkable contributions to political, social and economic theory, but also touch on her vibrant personality and intimate friendships. This collection, the fruit of more than four decades of involvement with Luxemburg's work, simultaneously showcases her penetratingly intellectual, political and deeply humanistic qualities.“An indispensable contribution to our understanding of Rosa Luxemburg, who emerges as formidable theorist, principled activist, and above all, a fully realized human being . . . . The Living Flame affirms Luxemburg’s lasting contribution and underscores the relevance of her legacy for our own, very different, age.” —Helen Scott, author, The Storm of History: Shakespeare’s Tempest and Capitalism“A profound and multidimensional investigation of a giant thinker and revolutionary. These [essays] show meticulous historical and theoretical attentiveness and at the same time are hugely timely; a significant contribution to Rosa Luxemburg studies and Marxist theory and history.” —Dana Mills, author, Rosa Luxemburg: Critical Lives“Uncommonly nuanced, probing, and also deeply principled explorations. [Le Blanc’s] mode of engagement nicely compliments that of Rosa Luxemburg and shows us her thoughts as a living and breathing work in progress, not merely echoes from an increasingly distant past. In addition, Le Blanc models how Marxists and Leftists in general might want to relate to one another when we debate complex issues and at times disagree.” —Axel Fair-Schulz, associate professor at SUNY Potsdam

In public life for half a century, my image and reputation have had more ups and downs than the Cyclone roller coaster at Coney Island. I have been called savior and sinner, fool and wise man, crusader and exploiter, hot head and dope. I am routinely scorned, admired, beloved, and belittled. The opinions are usually based on when they tuned in. Were you around for my early days as a crusading local newsman? Did you waste an evening inside Al Capone's empty vault? Were you watching when the bombs dropped in Afghanistan or Iraq, or did you tune into the raucous talk show when my nose got broken in the best television studio brawl ever caught on tape?
Since the attacks of September 11, 2001, and my employment by the conservative rabble-rousers of Fox News, and, more recently, with the coming of the Age of Trump, my professional life has been even more difficult to define. How could a sincerely progressive native-born Jew Rican New Yorker like me ever work for an outfit better suited to the vibes of Orange County, California, the Dixie, Appalachia, or the Mountain West? How could I not condemn and obstruct a wrecking ball like Donald Trump?
Over five decades, I have met most of the era's good and bad guys, from Ronald Reagan to Charles Manson, Fidel Castro to Yasser Arafat, and Muhammad Ali to John Lennon. Two figure heavily in this book, both longtime friends. Roger Ailes is the disgraced yet undeniably brilliant creator of Fox News. Donald Trump, once a flamboyant playboy, billionaire businessman, is now 45th President of the United States.
Now at the vigorous twilight of my career, I have nothing left to prove, and time has both enlightened and humbled me. In this book, I speak frankly about my failures and successes, my humiliations and triumphs. Throughout my career, I've done my best to provide you with groundbreaking journalism and great entertainment. In this book, I've tried to provide both . . . and a few life lessons, as well.
    Sincerely,
    Geraldo Rivera

FRANCIS SCHAEFFER was one of the most influential apologists of the 20th century. Through his speaking, writing, and filmmaking, Schaeffer successfully transformed the way people thought of the Christian faith, from a rather private kind of piety to a worldview that addressed every sphere of life. This volume—written by a man converted from agnosticism within days of meeting Schaeffer—is the first book devoted to exploring the heart and soul of Schaeffer's approach to the Christian life, and will help readers strive after the same kind of marriage of thought and life, of orthodoxy and love.
