Sinossi

In "The Wireless Operator'ÄîWith the U. S. Coast Guard," Lewis E. Theiss combines a rich tapestry of narrative and documentary styles to recount the vital role of wireless communication in maritime safety and operations. Set against the backdrop of the early-to-mid 20th century, Theiss employs an engaging prose that effortlessly blends personal anecdotes with technical insights, illuminating the evolution of communication technologies within the Coast Guard. This account serves not only as a tribute to the unsung heroes operating in the radio rooms but also as a critical discussion of the broader impact of wireless communication during times of peace and conflict. Lewis E. Theiss, with a background in maritime activities and first-hand experience as a radio operator in the U.S. Coast Guard, draws upon his expertise to fill a gap in the historical record. His unique perspective as both a practitioner and an observer allows him to provide an intimate look at the daily operations that kept coastal communities safe, as well as contributing to national defense. Theiss's understanding of the technical aspects of wireless communication also underscores his commitment to preserving the legacy of those who served. This book is a must-read for maritime historians, communication technology enthusiasts, and anyone fascinated by the evolution of the Coast Guard. Theiss presents a compelling blend of history and personal experience, inviting readers to appreciate the complexities of maritime communication while honoring the dedication of the operators who made it possible.

A rare memoir of underwater warfare in the treacherous Baltic.  Red Star Under The Baltic is the gripping memoir of a Soviet submariner during his years at sea in the Baltic during the Second World War. Not only is this a superb record of the appalling conditions endured on these basic craft, but a very human account detailing the comradeship and tensions among the crew as they operated in the most life-threatening conditions.   Viktor Korzh vividly describes the many actions that he and his comrades were involved in. Many of these were successful, and Korzh witnessed numerous engagements and sinkings of German shipping. However, it was by no means a one-sided contest, and there were some horrifyingly close calls. The comparatively shallow waters of the Baltic were less than ideal for submarine warfare. Perhaps the most dangerous and dramatic moment came when his submarine became entangled in netting. After frantic efforts, they just managed to extricate themselves before being depth-charged. Another constant threat was of mechanical malfunction.   It is extremely rare to have a totally authentic Russian account like this one, which has been superbly translated into English. It is a thrilling memoir, filled with nonstop action and underwater danger.  Previously published as Reserve of Strength

WHAT CAN I DO TO HELP?
This is a question that many seemingly well intentioned White people ask people of color. Yet, it places the responsibility to educate on their peers, friends, colleagues, and even strangers, rather than themselves. If you’ve ever asked or been asked “What can I do to help combat racism?” then Dear White Women: Let’s Get (Un)comfortable Talking About Racism is the answer you’re looking for.
From the creators of the award winning podcast Dear White Women, this book breaks down the psychology and barriers to meaningful race discussions for White people, contextualizing racism throughout American history in short, targeted chapters. The author of The Haunted Heart of Denver goes beyond the city limits to investigate the supernatural surroundings of Colorado’s capital.   In Denver, the spirits aren’t just penned to the city center. No, even the suburbs and outlying cities have the kind of history that could give quite a fright to the unsuspecting. Folks might be surprised to learn that a house in northwest Denver comes fully equipped with a basement theater—and spectral performers as well—and former phantom residents still roam their old homestead in what is now an Adams County open space. From Westminster’s Bowles House Museum, where even the ghosts were involved in renovations, to Littleton’s Melting Pot restaurant, a former Carnegie library that offers diners a side of the supernatural, accidental ghost hunter Kevin Pharris explores further tales of supernatural haunts and unexplained phenomena surrounding the Mile High City.   Includes photos!

‘An inspirational call to arms’ DAILY MAIL
‘This book is so sensible, so substantially researched, so briskly written, so clear in its arguments, that one wishes Baroness Cavendish was still whispering into the prime ministerial ear’ THE TIMES
‘A thoughtful handbook to help societies age gracefully’ FINANCIAL TIMES
‘This bold, visionary book is a wake-up call to governments. It is a wake-up call to us all’ SUNDAY TIMES
From award-winning journalist, Camilla Cavendish, comes a profound analysis of one of the biggest challenges facing the human population today.
The world is undergoing a dramatic demographic shift. By 2020, for the first time in history, the number of people aged 65 and over will outnumber children aged five and under. But our systems are lagging woefully behind this new reality. In Extra Time, Camilla Cavendish embarks on a journey to understand how different countries are responding to these unprecedented challenges.
Travelling across the world in a carefully researched and deeply human investigation, Cavendish contests many of the taboos around ageing. Interviewing leading scientists about breakthroughs that could soon transform the quality and extent of life, she sparks a debate about how governments, businesses, doctors, the media and each one of us should handle the second half of life. She argues that if we take a more positive approach, we should be able to reap the benefits of a prolonged life. But that will mean changing our attitudes and
using technology, community, even anti-ageing pills, to bring about a revolution.
In Extra Time, Camilla Cavendish explores the intersection of health, science, and social welfare, challenging the taboos around ageing and death. She presents a compelling argument for a revolution in public policy and services, advocating for a more positive approach to the second half of life.
