Trapped on shore, a captain fights desperately for a place on a ship Once, Marius believes, the world was wide and the sea was infinite. Adventure and profit awaited any man bold enough to step aboard a ship and cast his lot with the open ocean.   But those days are gone. After a long and undistinguished career, Marius’s reputation suffers an irreparable blow during the dark days of World War II when he refuses to go down with a sinking ship. It is the greatest crime a captain can commit, and it dooms him to hell on earth.   Trapped in Marseilles, Marius spends his days begging for a boat and his nights in a bitter, alcoholic stupor. The ocean has rejected him so fully, he thinks, that he doubts the waters would even allow him to drown. But as Marius learns, it’s possible for a man to drown on dry land.

Herbert George Wells was born on September 21st, 1866 in Bromley in Kent. He was the youngest of four siblings and his family affectionately knew him as ‘Bertie’.
The first few years of his childhood were spent fairly quietly, and Wells didn’t display much literary interest until, in 1874, he accidentally broke his leg and was left to recover in bed, largely entertained by the library of books his father regularly brought him. Through these Wells found he could escape the boredom and misery of his bed and convalescence by exploring the new worlds he encountered in these books.
From these humble beginnings began a career that was, after several delays, to be seen as one of the most brilliant of modern English writers.
Able to write comfortably in a number of genres he was especially applauded for his science fiction works such as The Time Machine and War of the Worlds but his forays into the social conditions of the times, with classics such as Kipps, were almost as commercially successful. His short stories are miniature masterpieces many of which bring new and incredible ideas of science fiction to the edge of present day science fact. Wells also received four nominations for the Nobel Prize in Literature.
Despite a strong and lasting second marriage his affairs with other women also brought the complications of fathering other children. His writings and work against fascism, as well as the promotion of socialism, brought him into increasing doubts with, and opposition to, religion. His writings on what the world could be in works, such as A Modern Utopia, are thought-provoking as well as being plausible, especially when viewed from the distressing times they were written in.
His diabetic condition pushed him to create what is now the largest Diabetes charity in the United Kingdom. Wells even found the time to run twice for Parliament. It was a long, distinguished and powerfully successful career by the time he died, aged 79, on August 13th, 1946.

A charming short story by W. S. Gilbert, best known for his collaboration with Arthur Sullivan on their beloved operettas, Angela offers a delightful twist on romance. Set in Venice, the story follows an Englishman who falls in love with his enigmatic neighbor after glimpsing her reflection in the water outside their windows. This unique premise explores themes of love and perception in an enchanting and humorous way.
First published in the Christmas Number of The Illustrated Sporting and Dramatic News in 1887, Angela was later included in the collection Foggerty's Fairy and Other Tales (1890). This collection also features other engaging tales by Gilbert and Sullivan, showcasing their diverse literary talents.
It was a pleasant discovery to find that Sullivan, in addition to his famed musical compositions, also wrote short stories. Angela is a standout example of their wit and creativity, and its audio version, available in CSA Word's Great Classic Short Stories series, provides an enjoyable and immersive listening experience.

Thomas Sanchez's international bestseller, Mile Zero, set in Key West, was hailed by the Washington Post as a 'holy terror of a book of immense power and passion,' lauded by Vanity Fair as 'mythmaking and magisterial,' and acclaimed by the New York Times as 'dazzling.' Sanchez returns to Key West, America's famous southernmost continental point, with a heart-racing ecological thriller. The exotic island city of the Florida Keys is being terrorized by murders committed by a mysterious voodoo assassin. With each new kill, it becomes clear that the skeleton-clad executioner has an ecological agenda. The novel propels us through a complex maze populated by defenders of America's only continental reef, rapacious developers, ruthless scammers, destroyers of marine life, and common people engaged in heroic acts to save their paradise. Everyone dreads being the killer's next victim as the clock counts down to the end of hurricane season and a final dramatic explosion of fear and rage. With canny perception and striki
