Synopsis

On a certain Saturday in June, year of our Lord 1880, between the hours of sunrise and sunset, the town of W——, in a State which shall be nameless, received two shocks.
Small affairs, concerning small people, could never have thrown W—— into such a state of excitement, for she was a large and wealthy town, and understood what was due to herself.
She possessed many factories, and sometimes a man came to his death among the ponderous machinery. Not long since one "hand" had stabbed another, fatally; and, still later, a factory girl had committed suicide.

“You must be our new neighbors!” Mrs Lowell gushes and waves across the picket fence. I clutch my daughter’s hand and smile back: but the second Mrs Lowell sees my husband a strange expression crosses her face. In that moment I make a promise. We finally have a family home. My past is far, far behind us. And I’ll do anything to keep it that way…

I used to clean other people’s houses—now, I can’t believe this home is actually mine. The charming kitchen, the quiet cul-de-sac, the huge yard where my kids can play. My husband and I saved for years to give our children the life they deserve.

Even though I’m wary of our new neighbor Mrs Lowell, when she invites us over for dinner it’s our chance to make friends. Her maid opens the door wearing a white apron, her hair in a tight bun. I know exactly what it’s like to be in her shoes. But her cold stare gives me chills…

The Lowells’ maid isn’t the only strange thing on our street. I’m sure I see a shadowy figure watching us. My husband leaves the house late at night. And when I meet a woman who lives across the way, her words chill me to the bone: Be careful of your neighbors.

Did I make a terrible mistake moving my family here?

I thought I’d left my darkest secrets behind. But could this quiet suburban street be the most dangerous place of all?

Book #2 in the SpoCompton Series
Boone has been prospecting with the Iron Brotherhood outlaw motorcycle gang for almost a year, trying to earn his patch with the club. When a simple muscle job goes terribly wrong, his world changes forever. He is quickly plunged deeper into a world of drug and intimidation, and the lines between right and wrong blur. The bonds of brotherhood that he forges with other members clash with the dark actions they take. His girlfriend, Faith, represents a danger of another kind, but Boone can’t stop himself where she is concerned, either.
When someone closest to him dies, and rampant rumors of a rat in the clubhouse puts everyone in danger, Boone comes to learn what it really means to live his life…in the cut.
Authors note: A “cut” is that leather vest that outlaw motorcycle gangmembers wear. It usually has a rocker on the back with the club name and city/region.
(*NOTE: Jack McCrae mysteries, Sandy Banks thrillers, and Stanley Melvin PI Stories also take place in the shared universe of the SpoCompton series)

"The Last Pilgrim" concludes the Rake's Progress Trilogy with a masterful exploration of redemption, family, and adaptation in a rapidly changing world.
When Jack Drummond's ex-wife orchestrates his arrest through Interpol, his carefully constructed world begins to crumble. His imprisonment in Belmarsh threatens not just his business empire but his most precious relationship – with his children. Released but blacklisted by London's financial establishment, Jack must rebuild from nothing while protecting his son Tristan from his mother's destructive influence and supporting his daughter Alice's humanitarian ambitions.
The story spans a transformative decade, from the early promise of cryptocurrency to the rise of artificial intelligence and the stark realities of war in Ukraine. Through these sweeping changes, Jack navigates the complexities of fatherhood, love, and survival. His relationship with Svetlana, a Ukrainian woman whose family becomes caught in the war, adds depth to his journey of personal growth.
Stuart-Douglas draws on his intimate knowledge of both old and new money to craft a narrative that seamlessly moves from the hunting fields of Wiltshire to the beach clubs of Tulum, from London boardrooms to war-torn Bucha. The author brings authenticity to every scene, whether describing international finance, English country traditions, or the brutal realities of modern warfare.
"The Last Pilgrim" is ultimately about transformation – personal, professional, and societal. It explores finding hope in destruction's aftermath, love in loss's shadow, and purpose in uncertainty. Stuart-Douglas has created a compelling finale that bridges high finance, family drama, and international politics, offering both entertainment and thoughtful examination of how we navigate change in an increasingly complex world.
