Synopsis

Stoicism: Using the Timeless Philosophy of the Ancient Greek Stoa to Achieve Greater Composure, Balance, and Contentment in Everyday Life

"With stoic calm": That's how people describe individuals who seemingly can't be thrown off balance by anything—and perhaps you wish that for yourself more often, too? In that case, you should take a closer look at the actual Stoa, and this book will show you how easily Stoicism can be integrated into your everyday life!
Reacting to events without emotion and not letting joyful occasions, annoyances, or strokes of fate affect you: this Stoa stereotype seems impossible and hardly desirable—but wouldn't a bit more control over your inner life be nice? Then a modern Stoicism approach is your royal road, because the fundamental idea of its founder Zeno is more relevant today than ever: leading a good life in which your internal and external worlds are in harmonious alignment. To achieve this, one must become master of their emotions and passions—and fortunately, with a little patience, it's quite simple to learn. In this book, you will first familiarize yourself with the theoretical foundations of Stoicism before discovering how to put them into practice. By working through a variety of exercises, tasks, and challenges, you will apply what you've learned and gradually develop the Stoa mindset. Prior knowledge or experience? Not required! Thanks to straightforward explanations and immediately applicable techniques, even newcomers can start effortlessly and achieve impressive results in no time.
At a Glance: Dive into the origins, central teachings, and fundamental assumptions of Stoicism and learn the 5 steps to a Stoic mindset.
Express Exercises: With simple, immediate strategies on topics such as gratitude, acceptance, or self-reflection, you will internalize the Stoa concept step by step.
Train Your Virtues: Through advanced exercises on adaptability, self-control, reason, and more, you'll deepen your abilities and perfect the core Stoic virtues.
The Ultimate Discipline: Find out how to apply your newly acquired skills in situations involving relationships, career development, or everyday challenges, and benefit from the Stoa in a comprehensive way.

Winston S. Churchill; The History Of The Second World War. Volume 6 – Triumph & Tragedy. With the beach landings of June 6th in the greatest amphibious assault ever seen the final phase of the war had begun. Churchill could survey his task with an easier mind. His relationship with Stalin was becoming increasingly more difficult as Stalin’s moves replaced one terror with another. Churchill was anxious to move forces through Italy to relieve the military pressure on Normandy and Stalin yet limit the advance of Soviet forces into Central and Eastern Europe. The last major German offensive came in the Ardennes during December 1944. With its repulse their resistance began to melt away. The Russians continued to advance heroically forward into Germany itself. In Italy the collapse resulted into Mussolini’s brutal execution by the Partisans. Two days later on April 30th. Hitler committed suicide in his bunker in Berlin. On May 8th VE Day surrendered Europe to the overwhelming giddiness of liberation. In the Pacific the Americans moved relentlessly forward their massive air power hammered Japanese cities. Their vast armadas of ships disgorged armies to retake the Philippines in the fast diminishing Japanese Empire. But an attack on the Japanese mainland would be debilitating. The new American President, Harry Truman therefore unleashed a new level of terror with the nuclear bombing of Nagasaki and Hiroshima Japan surrendered on August 14th 1945 and the world was still and at peace. But for Churchill the election loomed and the Great Man was swept from office on a Labour landslide. His place in history is not forgotten. The overview is read by Winston S Churchill MP and the volume narrated by Michael Jayston.

Generosity is more than a simple act of giving; it is a way of life that touches every facet of our human experience. It begins with an open heart that is willing to see the needs of others and a spirit that recognizes the beauty in sharing. When we choose to be generous, we are not merely offering material support, but we are also extending compassion, hope, and a sense of belonging to those around us.
At its core, generosity stems from an understanding of our interconnectedness. Each act of kindness creates ripples that extend far beyond the initial gesture, fostering a community built on trust and empathy. In a world that often emphasizes individual success, embracing the spirit of generosity means shifting our focus toward collective well-being. This shift encourages us to see the value in every life and reminds us that our actions can inspire profound change in both ourselves and the communities we serve.
The spirit of generosity is nurtured by an inner belief that every blessing, whether big or small, is meant to be shared. This belief drives us to look for opportunities to help others, even in times when we ourselves face challenges. Generosity is not reserved for moments of abundance; it can flourish in the most humble settings, turning everyday interactions into powerful expressions of human kindness. It teaches us that giving is not a burden but a joyous practice that enriches our lives and deepens our connections with others.

The Victorian Internet tells the colorful story of the telegraph's creation and remarkable impact, and of the visionaries, oddballs, and eccentrics who pioneered it, from the eighteenth-century French scientist Jean-Antoine Nollet to Samuel F. B. Morse and Thomas Edison. The electric telegraph nullified distance and shrank the world quicker and further than ever before or since, and its story mirrors and predicts that of the Internet in numerous ways.

In this thoughtful, deeply personal work, one of the nation's best-loved voices takes the plunge into politics and comes up with a book that has had all of America talking. Here, with great heart, supple wit, and a dash of anger, Garrison Keillor describes the simple democratic values—the Golden Rule, the obligation to defend the weak against the powerful, and others—that define his hard-working Midwestern neighbors and that today's Republicans seem determined to subvert.

A reminiscence, a political tract, and a humorous meditation, Homegrown Democrat is an entertaining, refreshing addition to today's rancorous political debate.
