Synopsis

In Knut Hamsun's novel 'Growth of the Soil', the reader is transported to the rugged landscape of rural Norway, where the story unfolds through the lives of Isak and Inger, a hardworking couple striving to tame the untamed land. Hamsun's writing style in this novel is characterized by its vivid descriptions of nature and the simple yet profound emotions of his characters. Published in 1917, 'Growth of the Soil' is considered a masterpiece of Norwegian literature and a prime example of the literary trend known as Rural Realism. The novel explores timeless themes of self-sufficiency, the relationship between humans and their environment, and the essence of community. Readers will be captivated by the poetic beauty of Hamsun's prose and the deep philosophical insights woven throughout the narrative. Knut Hamsun, a Nobel Prize-winning author known for his psychological insight and innovative storytelling techniques, drew inspiration for 'Growth of the Soil' from his own experiences living in the Norwegian countryside. His observations of rural life and his profound connection to nature shine through in this work. I highly recommend 'Growth of the Soil' to readers who appreciate literary masterpieces that explore the human experience in harmony with nature.

November 13th, 2021 will be forever burned into my memory. That day, my sister passed away via medical assistance in dying, after an 18 month battle with metastatic breast cancer. Medical assistance in dying became legal in Canada in 2016. Since then, thousands of terminally ill patients have taken advantage of their right to die. I never dreamed that my own sister would be one of them.
Early in the pandemic of 2020, my youngest sister Jennifer received the diagnosis of Stage IV inflammatory breast cancer at the age of 49. Her family and friends were witness to the depth of her inner strength and determination as she faced a barrage of cancer treatments. There was chemotherapy, surgeries and radiation; each one bringing with it the hopeful goal of helping to beat the cancer into remission.
In the summer of 2021, about 15 months into her cancer journey, it became evident that Jennifer was facing a losing battle. If all that medical science could offer her were treatments that diminished the quality of her life ,while doing little to beat back the cancer, she really saw no point in continuing them. She opted for palliative care only, knowing that the cancer would now run its course, unimpeded.
Being fiercely independent, Jennifer despised the very real prospect of soon becoming an invalid who could no longer care for herself. She faced the likelihood of an awful death in hospice as the cancer wreaked havoc in her body. She chose medical assistance in dying, taking back a modicum of control in a situation where she otherwise had none.
Jennifer's Choice is the poignant story of the final year and a half of Jennifer's life, and chronicles not only her experiences, but also those of her family as we supported her to the best of our abilities under the circumstances. Consider the philosophical and ethical questions raised by her choice, and how we navigated the unknown waters of medically assisted suicide.

John Calvin - Pilgrim and Pastor

An introduction to the essential life and thought of one of history's most influential theologians, who considered himself first and foremost a pilgrim and a pastor.
July 10, 2009, marks the five-hundredth anniversary of the birth of John Calvin. As controversial as he was influential, his critics have named a judgmental and joyless attitude after him, while his admirers celebrate him as the principal theologian of Reformed Christianity. Yet his impact is unmistakable-a primary developer of western civilization whose life and work have deeply affected five centuries' worth of pastors, scholars, and individuals.
What will surprise the readers of this book, however, is that Calvin did not live primarily to influence future generations. Rather, he considered himself first and foremost a spiritual pilgrim and a minister of the Word in the church of his day. It was from that "essential" Calvin that all his influence flowed.
Here is an introduction to Calvin's life and thought and essence: a man who moved people not through the power of personality but through passion for the Word, a man who sought to serve the gospel in the most humble of roles.
