Summary

The Proper Golfing Handbook uses words, photos and videos to explain all the key skills. The idea is to understand the theory first, then see it in action. This is a book that can be taken with you onto the golf course in your golf bag for when your game needs that instant fix. If you are a complete beginner the early chapters give a firm base on which to build your game: grip, stance, set-up and a relaxed swing. These are the foundations to which you must return before each shot, and are the basis for the effortless power we all want. If you are an improver the book acts as your reset. It explains how to make all the different types of shot, and how to get out of trouble. And since golf is the ultimate psychological game it helps you find a more positive and realistic mindset. In short, The Proper Golfing Handbook shows how to fix your game for good. If you are an experienced golfer wanting to take your game to a new level, help is at hand. Use The Proper Golfing Handbook to check the basics, then learn how to fade and draw the ball, make high and low shots, and play from poor or sloping lies. It will also help you score better by managing the course. If you are a senior golfer Julian Mellor shows how to prepare your body for golf using exercises and good warm-up routines. He teaches a realistic swing for life, one that will avoid injury but still deliver power and accuracy. All golfers will appreciate the final chapter on common faults and how to fix them, and particularly how to reset mid-round if you 'lose it'. Read on, relax, get out of your own way and let the magic happen. Proper golfing is within your grasp!

Dorothee Haering is a photographer and owner of the graphics and marketing agency "bildhaft", in Munich, Germany. Golf has accompanied she from her cradle, and most of her family has the bug too. Her grandfather practiced enthusiastically on a chipping green in his garden, and her father, a successful team player, regularly took her with him on the golf course when she was a child. At the weekends she was a proud caddy and accompanied "her players" throughout the tournaments and also briefly took part in junior training. Ever since she saw Jack Niklaus play golf 1972 in Munich she knew: she wanted to become a Golf Professional. Later, life had other plans for her and there followed an involuntary golf-intermission lasting thirty-eight years until the golf addiction broke out again with a vengeance. Her goal for her (second) golf career: she wanted to "Break 80".

In the book project "Move your Game", Dorothee Haering has gathered together the information that she would have liked to have possessed at the beginning of her own golf career. It would have made following her plan to a single handicap more efficient.

SHORTLISTED FOR THE 2023 EDWARD STANFORD TRAVEL WRITING AWARDS TRAVEL BOOK OF THE YEAR
One woman, one bike and one richly entertaining, perception-altering journey of discovery.
In 2015, as the Syrian War raged and the refugee crisis reached its peak, Rebecca Lowe set off on her bicycle across the Middle East. Driven by a desire to learn more about this troubled region and its relationship with the West, Lowe's 11,000-kilometre journey took her through Europe to Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan, Egypt, Sudan, the Gulf and finally to Iran.
It was an odyssey through landscapes and history that captured her heart, but also a deeply challenging cycle across mountains, deserts and repressive police states that nearly defeated her. Plagued by punctures and battling temperatures ranging from -6 to 48C, Lowe was rescued frequently by farmers and refugees, villagers and urbanites alike, and relied almost entirely on the kindness and hospitality of locals to complete this living portrait of the modern Middle East.
This is her evocative, deeply researched and often very funny account of her travels - and the people, politics and culture she encountered.
'Terrifically compelling ... bursting with humour, adventure and insight into the rich landscapes and history of the Middle East. Lowe recounts the beauty, kindnesses and complexities of the lands she travels through with an illuminating insight. A wonderful new travel writer.' Sir Ranulph Fiennes
