Sinopsis

POETRY

Joy Howard has something to say in her poems about nature, and human nature, and about grief, and time, and memory.

Her combination of tender but acute observation and mordant wit is reminiscent of U.A. Fanthorpe.

These are strong, womanly poems, characterised by the uncluttered vision of a poet who tells her own truth, regardless of whether she is wryly considering the contents of the myth-kitty or looking afresh at earlier anger and later loss.

An engaging simplicity of language and expression gives the whole collection a powerful honesty.

You can rely on these poems; they will not let you down.

Clark Ashton Smith was a poet, sculptor, painter, and author of fantasy, horror, and science fiction short stories. It is for these stories and his literary friendship with H. P. Lovecraft, from 1922 until Lovecraft's death in 1937, that he is mainly remembered today. With Lovecraft and Robert E. Howard, also a friend and correspondent, Smith remains one of the most famous contributors to the pulp magazine Weird Tales. This early volume of Clark Ashton Smith's poetry was published when he was only 19-years-old.

    Love. What is love?

The question is asked by each of us but the answer remains elusive.

Dictionaries summon up many words but none fulfill. Love itself is often ethereal, felt but only seen in a glance, a look, a fleeting touch. Part of Love’s beauty is perhaps in the fact that the question never can be adequately answered; its ephemeral, a chimera of the heart and only felt.

Our own experiences are unique and personal to ourselves and of little help defining it for another.

Love is perhaps best expressed through poetry. As Plato said 2500 years ago “At the touch of a lover, everyone becomes a poet”. Writing a love poem for ones’ partner is seen as the most romantic of gestures. It opens our hearts to another's. Lovers love.

Here, in this volume history’s greatest poets convey thoughts, feelings and sentiments of love to you in quick (or bite-size) conversations of verse that can slip into your day and your partner's heart.

With one eye on social media and another on mental well-being, Luke Wright looks under the hood of a spluttering nation. Eschewing the formal verse structures of his previous two collections, Wright presents free-wheeling splenetic poems on the joys of pretentiousness, late-night carb-heavy FOMO, and the lay-bys and bypasses of a country that 'doesn't make anything anymore.' Shout these poems aloud in pubs, or whisper them in B&Bs. Keep an eye on the ones you love.

Mansfield Park is Jane Austen's 1814 novel focusing on Fanny Price, the daughter of a poor Portsmouth family, who is taken to live with her aunt and uncle Bertram's family on their estate at the age of ten. Surrounded by her wealthy and privileged cousins, and continually reminded of her lower status by her bullying Aunt Norris, Fanny grows up timid and shy, but with a strong sense of ethics, partly instilled by her kindly cousin Edmund. Fanny's gratitude and friendship for Edmund gradually grow into love, but the introduction of Mary and Henry Crawford, a captivating sister and brother, into the neighborhood of Mansfield Park, confuses and complicates the affections of the Bertram household. In this recording, LibriVox volunteers lend their voices to the colorful cast of characters in Austen's classic novel.
