Summary

In "Notes on Stable Management in India and the Colonies," Joshua A. Nunn provides a comprehensive examination of equine care and management within the colonial context. Combining meticulous research with practical insights, Nunn addresses the ecological and cultural factors influencing horse care practices in India and its colonies. The book is structured to serve both as a manual for stable management and as a critical commentary on colonial attitudes towards animal husbandry. Nunn'Äôs prose is both scientifically rigorous and accessible, reflecting a deep understanding of both equine science and the socio-political environment of the time, thus situating the reader within the complexities of colonial and post-colonial landscapes. Joshua A. Nunn is a seasoned equestrian and a scholar with a notable background in agricultural practices and colonial studies. His extensive travels through India and its colonies have endowed him with firsthand experience of the local equestrian practices, as well as an appreciation for the interplay between colonial authority and local customs. Nunn'Äôs scholarly pursuits are rooted in his commitment to understanding how colonialism has shaped human-animal relationships, an exploration which forms the backbone of his work. Highly recommended for historians, equine enthusiasts, and scholars of colonial studies, Nunn'Äôs work is an essential addition to the discourse surrounding animal management in colonial settings. This book not only enriches our understanding of stable management but also invites readers to reconsider the dynamics between human practices and the environments they inhabit.

The water cycle, also known as the hydrological cycle, is a continuous and dynamic process that moves water throughout the Earth's atmosphere, surface, and underground reservoirs. This cycle plays a vital role in sustaining ecosystems, regulating climate, and supporting human life. Water undergoes various transformations as it moves through different stages, driven by the energy of the sun and the force of gravity.
One of the fundamental processes of the water cycle is evaporation, where water from oceans, lakes, rivers, and even soil turns into water vapor due to heat from the sun. Plants also contribute to this process through transpiration, where they release moisture from their leaves into the air. Together, these processes add significant amounts of water vapor to the atmosphere. As the air rises and cools, this vapor undergoes condensation, forming clouds composed of tiny water droplets or ice crystals.
When these droplets combine and become heavy enough, precipitation occurs in the form of rain, snow, sleet, or hail. Precipitation is the primary way water returns to the Earth's surface, replenishing water bodies and providing essential moisture for plant and animal life. Depending on the terrain and environmental conditions, this water can take several different paths. Some of it infiltrates into the ground, recharging underground aquifers in a process known as groundwater recharge. Other portions of the water flow overland as surface runoff, eventually collecting in rivers, lakes, and oceans. This runoff helps shape landscapes by eroding and transporting sediments over time.

Mexico’s economic history is a fascinating journey shaped by diverse influences, from the ancient Aztec empire to the complexities of the modern global economy. Over the centuries, Mexico has experienced dramatic transformations, driven by conquests, colonial rule, revolutions, and economic policies that have defined its growth and challenges. Understanding the evolution of Mexico’s economy requires examining its foundations, the role of geography and natural resources, and the early trade networks that set the stage for future economic systems.
The foundations of Mexico’s economy date back to the indigenous civilizations that thrived long before the Spanish conquest. The Aztecs, in particular, established a sophisticated economic system based on agriculture, trade, and tribute collection. Markets flourished in major cities like Tenochtitlán, where goods from across Mesoamerica were exchanged. The Aztec economy was not just a local system but a well-organized network that connected distant regions, allowing the movement of resources such as cacao, textiles, and obsidian. This structure provided a strong economic base, but it also made the region vulnerable to external forces, particularly the arrival of the Spanish.
Geography and natural resources have played a crucial role in shaping Mexico’s economic development. The country’s vast landscapes include fertile valleys, mineral-rich mountains, and long coastlines, all of which have influenced economic activities throughout history. The presence of silver, for example, turned Mexico into one of the most important centers of global trade during the colonial period. However, while natural resources have been a source of wealth, they have also led to economic dependency and external exploitation, shaping Mexico’s economic struggles even in modern times.

The hilarious and endearing true tale of two urban Americans who escaped to a tiny olive farm in rural New Zealand.
For Jared Gulian, leaving the United States and coming to tiny Wellington, New Zealand, was a big enough switch from the bright lights of big cities. So when his partner CJ decided they just had to buy a rundown olive grove in the Wairarapa Valley, it was almost too much to cope with.
First they'd have to drive over the dangerous Remutaka ranges to get there, and Jared was terrified of heights. Then they'd have to figure out what on earth you do with 500 olive trees that hadn't been pruned for years, a geriatric rooster, warring hens, an obese kunekune pig, cast sheep, marauding cattle, and understanding your neighbors when they said "yiece" but meant "yes."
In this delightful memoir, Jared Gulian describes the first four years of their new life in the country, its disasters and small triumphs, its surprises and pleasures. But most of all he describes the warmth of the local community that welcomed them, saved them from certain peril, taught them how to cook, how to care for animals, and how to understand and love the land.
If you love Peter Mayle, David Sedaris, Frances Mayes, or James Herriot, this charming adventure is for you.

Dissatisfied with the reliability of its AEC Merlin and Swift single-deck buses, London Transport in 1973 purchased six Leyland Nationals for evaluation. Liking what it saw of this ultimate standard product, where even the paint swatch was of Leylands choice, LT took up an option to buy fifty more from a canceled export order and then bought further batches of 110, 30 and 140 to bring the LS class to 437 members by the middle of 1980. A year later the last MBAs and SMSs were replaced on Red Arrow services by sixty-nine new Leyland National 2s.Straightforward but reliable, the LS satisfied London Transports single-deck needs for a decade and a half, often standing in for double-deckers when needed, and then going on to help hold the fort during the tough years of early tendering, during which some innovative LS operations introduced several new liveries and identities. The type served the ten years expected out of it with few worries, only starting to disappear when minibuses came on strength at the end of the 1980s. Although the LS was formally retired by 1992, refurbishment programs gave survivors an extended lease of life, bringing us the National Greenway, the ultimate development of the Leyland National. Most of the Red Arrow National 2s thus became GLSs, and lasted until 2002.Matthew Wharmby is an author, photographer and editor specializing in London bus history. His published books include London Transports Last Buses: Leyland Olympians L 1-263, Routemaster Requiem and Routemaster Retrospective (with Geoff Rixon), London Transport 1970-1984 (with R. C.
