Griffin is seeking solitude and quiet, but is soon forced from the village and finds temporary shelter in the home of an old university friend, Kemp. There, injured and fatigued, he tells his old friend how he discovered the secret to making himself invisible, and tries to join forces with him to use this new power to bring about a reign of terror. 
  The Time Machine 
  A Victorian scientist travels into the far future and discovers the descendants of humanity, the Eloi, living in apparent peace and tranquility. However, after his time machine goes missing, he discovers that humanity has in fact split into two distinct species, and the Morlocks are not quite so benign as the Eloi. The time traveller must arm himself and get his time machine back if he ever wants to return to his own era.

  Set against the international background of the late Victorian rich and privileged, The African Millionaire is a far-fetched and farcical romp in which gullible Sir Charles Vandrift MP is slowly but steadily parted from his vast wealth by a series of confidence tricks and deceptions. Many and varied are the disguises of the perpetrator, a man revered amongst the criminal fraternity and even admired by police authorities in several countries: the redoubtable Colonel Clay, so called for his ability to mold his persona and blend in to any background.
  
  As the story unfolds it becomes obvious that Vandrift is not the pillar of probity or propriety that we expect of a knight of the realm and that he may, indeed, be of less moral worth than his worthwhile adversary who protests that his deeds are guided by higher moral principles and values. Should Clay be caught, will the jury find him guilty? Despite the proselytising of the author, a man of strong political conviction, the story has an inspired lunacy which keeps it entertaining as it moves swiftly to the close and we are prompted to reflect on the responsibility of our fiscal administrators, their subsequent substantial rewards and the misery they can sometimes wreak amongst poorer mortals.

  'Aepyornis Island' is the strange tale of a naturalist who finds himself adrift in a canoe in the Indian Ocean, with three mysterious rare giant eggs which he has collected. He knows they are the eggs of the aepyornis - a bird which has been extinct for hundreds of years. He is amazed, when hunger forces him to try one of the eggs, to find that it is fresh. When he opens the second egg several days later, he is horrified to find a still live embryo inside it. Before he is forced to eat the third and final egg, his canoe is cast up on a deserted atoll, where he finds fresh water and plenty of fish in the lagoon. Then the final egg hatches, and the strangest part of the adventure begins.
