Sinossi

Joseph A. Altsheler wrote several volumes of fiction that cover the service of Confederate soldier Harry Kenton and his friends as they take part in various battles of the Civil War. Altsheler’s books have been historically popular amoung young readers and adults alike.  This volume covers the battle of Shiloh, the first major battle in the Western theater and the biggest battle in American history up to that point in time. The climactic battle saw Ulysses S. Grant’s Union forces stave off disaster on the first day and push back the Confederates for a victory on the second day in April 1862.

Award-winning Florida novelist Patrick Smith's first novel, The River Is Home, revolves around a Mississippi family's struggle to cope with changes in their rural environment. Poor in material possessions, Skeeter's kinfolk are rich in their appreciation of their beautiful natural surroundings. The river on which they live—with its food supply, steamboats, and floods—figures strongly in their lives as the source of life, change, and death. Though their life is a simple one, it's filled with friendship, loyalty, love, and compassion.

This prize-winning novel of a fugitive priest in Mexico is quite simply “Graham Greene’s masterpiece” (John Updike, The New York Review of Books).   In the Mexican state of Tabasco in the 1930s, all vestiges of Catholicism are being outlawed by the government. As churches are razed, icons are banned, and the price of devotion is execution, an unnamed member of the clergy flees. He’s known only as the “whisky priest.” Beset by heretical vices, guilt, and an immoral past, he’s torn between self-destruction and self-preservation. Too modest to be a martyr, too stubborn to follow the law, and too craven to take a bullet, he now travels as one of the hunted—attending, in secret, to the spiritual needs of the faithful. When a peasant begs him to return to Tabasco to hear the confessions of a dying man, the whisky priest knows it’s a trap. But it’s also his duty—and possibly his salvation.   Named by Time magazine as one of the hundred best English-language novels written since 1923, The Power and the Glory is “a violent, raw” work on “suffering, strained faith, and ultimate redemption” (The Atlantic).

Based on a true story: A novel of an illicit love affair in nineteeth-century Ireland by the New York Times–bestselling author of The American Heiress. Katharine O’Shea is an unhappily married young mother of three when she meets Charles Stewart Parnell, “the uncrowned king of Ireland.” They couldn’t be more different. Kitty is from an aristocratic English family. Born in County Wicklow to Protestant gentry, Parnell is a passionate crusader for Ireland’s oppressed poor. But their first encounter leaves them both with the certainty that something momentous has occurred. Before long, they’re engaged in a forbidden liaison—one that will have profound ramifications for Kitty’s personal life and Charles’s brilliant political career. As their love affair plays out on the world stage, scandal and a scorned husband’s revenge conspire to destroy everything Charles has worked to achieve for the Irish. Set against the tumultuous backdrop of late-nineteenth-century England and Ireland, Dorothy Eden’s most ambitious novel weaves a passionate, heartbreaking story of a larger-than-life man and woman whose only crime is falling in love.
