Synopsis

The late nineteenth century American humorist John Kendrick Bangs was an inventive satirical writer, who inspired the genre of Bangsian fantasy. Famous works like ‘A House-Boat on the Styx’ employed a fantastical premise, involving the use of famous literary or historical individuals and their interactions in the Afterlife. In the popular magazines ‘Puck’ and ‘Life’, Bangs created numerous hilarious characters, including Jimmieboy, the Idiot, Alice in Blunderland, the Unwiseman and a popular Raffles spin-off series — all revealing his important contribution to the development of humorist literature. On My Knees is Periel Aschenbrand’s seriously funny follow-up to her debut memoir The Only Bush I Trust Is My Own.At the beginning of On My Knees, we find Periel chain-smoking her days away on a plastic-covered couch, watching reruns of Law & Order while she squats in her deceased grandmother’s apartment and adjusts to being alone for the first time in a decade. So begins a Dante-esque journey through the many rings of single-girl hell that includes crazy one-night stands; an unhealthy attachment to a dental hygienist; a run-in with Philip Roth; and, in the end, a trip to Israel and an encounter with a man who just might be the one.Hysterical and heartfelt, On My Knees traces Periel’s riotous attempt to rebuild her life, her relationships, and her trademark confidence.

A daring, hilariously neurotic literary debut from the acclaimed actor and comedian Brett Gelman (Stranger Things, Fleabag).
Enter the wonderfully weird, always uncomfortable, side-splittingly funny world of The Terrifying Realm of the Possible, where your worst fears of who you are or might become are always just around the corner. In these masterful short stories from the singular mind of the actor and comedian Brett Gelman, you’ll meet five individuals, each navigating a uniquely strange stage of life:
    - ABRAHAM AMSTERDAM (the child)
    - MENDEL FREUDENBERGER (the teenager)
    - JACKIE COHEN (the adult)
    - IRIS BELOW (the senior)
    - Z (the dead)
Our characters face the big issues; the ones we all face. As they traverse the prickly terrain of morality, family, sex, fame, religion, and death they search for answers to life's unanswerable questions. In the futility of that search comes the absurdity, along with the comedy. The composite portrait is an existential (mis)adventure of Rothian proportions. Gelman's remarkable first book is a bold, unforgettable debut that challenges our assumptions about what it means to be human.

“Be warned—this series is addictive. You’ll soon be hooked on the small town of Partonville and its cast of assorted characters” (BookReporter).   In her late eighties, Dorothy Wetstra is still going strong—getting around in her 1976 Lincoln Continental (nicknamed “The Tank”), playing bunco with friends, and catching up on local events while sitting at the counter at Harry’s.   But her beloved car seems to be ailing, and as Dorothy packs up her possessions at Crooked Creek Farm and prepares to move to Partonville, Illinois, she’s determined to find a silver lining. For example, her new home is conveniently located—perfect for her new life as a pedestrian—and she gets to decorate it any way she pleases! Plus, her new friends Katie and Josh will be relocating from Chicago to Crooked Creek Farm.   As the moving process proves more arduous than expected, Dorothy realizes it may be time for her to slow down. But old habits die hard, and Dorothy’s routines will prove as hard to break as The Tank itself . . .   “Fans of Jan Karon’s Mitford or Philip Gulley’s Harmony will revel in the antics of the residents of Partonville.” —Publishers Weekly
