Summary

The late nineteenth century American humorist John Kendrick Bangs was an inventive satirical writer, who inspired the genre of Bangsian fantasy. Famous works like ‘A House-Boat on the Styx’ employed a fantastical premise, involving the use of famous literary or historical individuals and their interactions in the Afterlife. In the popular magazines ‘Puck’ and ‘Life’, Bangs created numerous hilarious characters, including Jimmieboy, the Idiot, Alice in Blunderland, the Unwiseman and a popular Raffles spin-off series — all revealing his important contribution to the development of humorist literature. From the winner of the Man Booker Prize for The Gathering. “Clever, unsettling, and thoroughly modern . . . We can hear echoes of the Joyce of Dubliners.” —The New York Times Book Review

The second novel to be published in America by widely acclaimed Irish author Anne Enright, The Wig My Father Wore is a spry, hilarious novel about parents, love, religion, and the absurdities of them all.

Grace is a young Dubliner who works on a television show called Love Quiz. Her father is going benignly senile, but her life otherwise seems fairly solid. When Stephen arrives on her doorstep, however, Grace has no idea what she’s in for. Stephen explains that he is an angel, a former bridge builder who committed suicide in 1934. He has been sent back to earth (as all suicides are) to guide lost souls. Grace does not take this personally at first, but eventually she has to face the idea that things are not so easy, and that her greatest intimacy is with this supernatural creature. As Grace begins to take stock of her life and the prospect of caring enough about something to fight for it, The Wig My Father Wore takes us on a moving, surreal romp through Catholicism, parents, and the reclamation of love from the twin modern evils of cynicism and the detritus of pop culture.

Although best known for his Winnie the Pooh stories, A.A. Milne spent years as an editor at the English humor magazine Punch. These sprightly essays were chosen from the hundreds he wrote during that period. As usual, they are funny, wry, and poke fun at almost all of our human foibles. There are 6 short one act plays that he wrote to demonstrate the 6 allowable plots for amateur playwrights and they are absolutely hilarious. The other topics run the gamut from dogs to dates. At his Catholic high school, he strikes up an unlikely friendship with a nun who shares Gary's love of soap operas, which becomes a salvation to them both. And don't get him started on how a bad hotel room can ruin even the best vacation. Clinton Kelly is probably best known for teaching women how to make their butts look smaller. But in I Hate Everyone, Except You, he reveals some heretofore-unknown secrets about himself, like that he's a finicky connoisseur of 1980s pornography, a disillusioned critic of New Jersey's premier water parks, and perhaps the world's least enthused high-school commencement speaker.

Whether he's throwing his baby sister in the air to jumpstart her cheerleading career or heroically rescuing his best friend from death by mud bath, Clinton leaps life's social hurdles with aplomb. With his signature wit, he shares his unique ability to navigate the stickiest of situations, like deciding whether it's acceptable to eat chicken wings with a fork on live television (spoiler: it's not). Clinton delves into all these topics—and many more—in this thoroughly unabashedly frank and uproarious collection.

The Journey to Ineffectiveness: A Beginner’s Guide” by Dr JC, presents the novel argument that Ineffectiveness is a good thing and we should embrace it. It lays out a plan whereby we can increase our ineffectiveness. The book introduces our other IQ (Ineffectiveness Quotient), which is measured by our behavior, rather than our mental ability. It introduces a number of areas that present us opportunities to increase our IQ in a humorous, and some might say an outrageous, style. Let’s take a look at a few examples. Confess! You’ve bought and/or been given a self-help book. You probably read part of, but 90% of the people who buy them read the entire book. Furthermore, .0001% take their advice, but don’t despair. The time and money you spent on self-help increase your ineffectiveness. While this isn’t a self-help book, it will increase your ineffectiveness and determine you Ineffectiveness Quotient. Dr JC will take you on a hilarious journey through many areas of your life. In addition to self-help, you’ll be taking a look at some so-called mental helpers, the search for domestic tranquility, the dumbness that surrounds us, and many more. The journey will take you from your favorite ‘big box’ store to dealing with artificial intelligence and everything in between. Get ready and buckle your seatbelt. We’re going for a ride with Dr JC that’s a laugh a minute. He says to be sure and bring snacks and plenty of tequila for our stops along the way. There’s plenty of room so All Aboard!
