Synopsis

‘Kingdom of the Monkey’ is the extraordinary and vivid account of a country so captivating, yet so obscure in every way, that the deeper you go in the harder it gets to look away. Cambodia, 1993 – 2003: this is no tropical paradise; stay too long out there and soon nothing you may come across really holds the same power to shock or surprise you. It’s a time when all acceptable norms of humanity seem to be turned upside down. Even the last of Indochina’s civil wars, grinding on out in the countryside, presents as a mere sideshow diversion to the main events being played out in the free-for-all capital that is Phnom Penh.

With Mountain Madness, Clinton Crockett Peters chronicles his travels and personal transformation from a West Texas evangelical to mountain guide-addict to humbled humanist after a near-fatal injury in Japan's Chichibu Mountains. From 2007 to 2010, Peters lived in Kosuge Village (population nine hundred), nestled in central Japan's peaks, where he was the only foreigner in the rugged town. Using these three years as a frame, this essay collection profiles who he was before Japan, why he became obsessed with mountains, and his fallout from mountain obsession, including an essay on Craig Arnold, the poet who disappeared on a Japanese volcano. Ultimately, the collection asks, how can landscape create and end identities?

China — Superpower or Basket Case? You decide!
    (Author's narration)
A wide-eyed expat is detained by Beijing cops and told to sign a false confession. Will he make it out of China alive?
Dueling the Dragon is a great adventure story, but this one just happens to be true!
With a journalist's eye and lively wit, LeRoy exposes the deep levels of corruption tearing at China's social fabric. You will learn of college students sold into slavery, media suppression of pollution reports, and persecution of a broadcaster just trying to do his job!
Yet there is delight amid the despair, reverie amid the revulsion, as LeRoy encounters China's "raven-haired beauties". You'll laugh away the tears with this riveting memoir!
"An adventure, a memoir, and certainly one of the more entertaining books about China before us today."
    San Francisco Review of Books
“Shows China in a ‘behind-the-curtain’ way that is informative, entertaining, and absolutely thrilling, even with the despairs and triumphs.”
    Amy’s Bookshelf Reviews
“A fascinating portrait of a time, a place, and a man for readers who want to know more about the ‘real’ China. Very well written and revealing.”

With a 1958 portable typewriter in his suitcase, the writer wanders Havana’s crumbling back alleys, bullet-sprayed museums, and grand hotels where the relics of the Revolution and the ghost of Hemingway still speak loudly. When his typewriter breaks in transit, the writer is forced to reconsider his writing holiday and put his novel on hold, until a new story emerges from the vibrance and history in the Old City—Habana Vieja. Recipient of a 2016 Eric Hoffer Award for non-fiction, The Havana Papers reveals a complex, contemporary portrait of one of the world's great historic cities.
