Synopsis

In Classroom Six, second left down the hall, Henry has been on the lookout for a friend. A friend who shares. A friend who listens. Maybe even a friend who likes things to stay the same and all in order, as Henry does. But on a day full of too close and too loud, when nothing seems to go right, will Henry ever find a friend—or will a friend find him? With insight and warmth, this heartfelt story from the perspective of a boy on the autism spectrum celebrates the everyday magic of friendship.

If you think that it’s impossible to reach them, then you haven’t met Cherry yet!

The discovery of an explorer’s journal from long ago reveals an epic adventure of magic and danger in this middle grade fantasy series debut.

Archaeologists have recently discovered fragments from a journal kept by one Ven Polypheme. They tell of his remarkable travels through the known and unknown world. Ven’s original journals are reproduced in this book. Great care has been taken to reconstruct the parts that did not survive . . .

Charles Magnus Ven Polypheme—known as Ven—is the youngest son of a long line of famous shipwrights. He dreams not of building ships, but of sailing them to far-off lands where magic thrives. Ven gets his chance when he is chosen to direct the Inspection of his family’s latest ship—and sets sail on the journey of a lifetime.

After surviving an attack by fire pirates, Ven is rescued by a passing ship on its way to the Island of Serendair. But these seemingly chance events may be part of someone’s grand design. Shadowy figures are hunting for the famed Floating Island, the only source of the mystical Water of Life. They think Ven can lead them to this treasure. And they will stop at nothing to get it—even murder.

A singer calls out to the crowd.
An electric bass thumps out a beat.
    Horns blare and strings swirl.
These are the sounds of R & B.

Rhythm and blues music evolved from all sorts of sounds: swinging jazz, gritty blues, and African American spiritual songs. The music's smooth mix of styles made it unique, and its passionate performers made it a sensation. Ever since Ray Charles hit the charts in the 1950s, R & B fans have held it down on dance floors. And R & B singers have belted out messages of love and calls for social change.
