Summary

The founder of Smallcakes, featured on Food Network’s Cupcake Wars, shares his story and his recipes for cupcakes, ice creams, and other delights.

Jeff Martin created the wildly popular and fast-growing Smallcakes franchise, and in this book he shares not only thirty creative recipes but his experiences turning his passion into a business and coming up with some of his very first signature cupcake flavors like Cookies-n-Cream. He appeared on the Food Network’s reality show called Cupcake Wars—and famously became the guy who forgot the pumpkin in a pumpkin cupcake challenge. That popular recipe for a Pumpkin Cupcake with Cardamon buttercream is among the recipes in this book.

He introduces creative new flavors like Peanut Butter Pretzel and French Toast with Bacon, and since Smallcakes is a family-owned company, he also includes his kids’ favorites. His son Jax loves bubble gum, so they created a Bubblegum Cupcake. His daughter Lily asked her dad to come up with some crazy flavors like Orange Creamsicle and Caramel Pecan Carrot Cake. And cupcakes are only the beginning—you’ll also find recipes for ice cream and other confections offered now at Smallcakes locations, such as Nutella Wella Ice Cream, Mama’s Chocolate Fudge, and Smallcakes Crazy Monster Cookies.

The first regional cookbook published in the United States, this nineteenth century kitchen manual includes recipes, kitchen tips and house management solutions.

Published in 1824 in Washington, DC, Virginia Housewife is considered by many culinary historians to be the first real American cookbook, with recipes that originated in American kitchens, leaving behind British traditions, ingredients and methods. Virginia Housewife is also recognized as the nation’s first regional cookbook with a focus on southern-style specialties, some appearing in print for the first time, such as Ochra Soup, Curry of Catfish, Gumbo, Chicken Pudding, Apoquiniminc Cakes. But author Mary Randolph also includes local variations of recipes from the West Indies, New England, Spain, and France, all reflecting the influence of many cuisines on Southern cooking. Diverse offerings include Dough Nuts, Gaspacho, Ropa Vieja, as well as a number of delightful ice cream recipes including, black walnut, quince, pear, citron, and almond. An immediate success, Virginia Housewife was republished at least nineteen times before the Civil War.

The Virginia Housewife is also a complete lifestyle reference providing an introduction to the food, culture, and manners of the antebellum South, as well as housekeeping instructions on topics ranging from soap making to herb drying and silver cleaning—everything that a woman of the nineteenth (or the twenty-first) century might desire to know.

This facsimile edition of Mary Randolph’s Virginia Housewife was reproduced by permission from the volume in the collection of the American Antiquarian Society, Worcester, Massachusetts, founded in 1812.

Cherry trees herald Spring, with their beautiful blossoms. With our warmer summers, they also provide luscious fruit, and with a full tree of cherries, it can be difficult to know how to cook and preserve them. This book provides the inspiration and with the help of the authors, you can enjoy the fruit through the summer months. Mulberries are more unusual and represent a challenge.Wild cherries originated in the Caucasus Mountains, and cultivated cherries spread from Rome, to Britain, and then to the USA in the 1870s. Black mulberries came from central Asia, reaching Europe via ancient trade routes.White mulberries came from China and formed the highly-lucrative and closely-guarded silk trade. Red mulberries are native to the USA and grow into remarkably pretty trees.
