Summary

In "With the Flag in the Channel; or, The Adventures of Captain Gustavus Conyngham," James Barnes intricately weaves a tale that navigates the tumultuous waters of maritime adventure set against the backdrop of the American Revolution. Through a vivid narrative style, Barnes employs rich descriptive language and detailed characterizations to vividly bring to life the exploits of Captain Conyngham, a Revolutionary War naval hero. The novel intricately explores themes of bravery, nationalism, and the moral complexities of warfare, while also reflecting the broader socio-political climate of the late 18th century, an era marked by both extraordinary courage and chilling treachery. James Barnes, a prolific author and historian, dedicated much of his career to researching and elucidating naval history and the age of sail. His extensive knowledge of maritime affairs and his passion for Revolutionary War narratives undoubtedly influenced this work, endowing it with authenticity and verisimilitude. Barnes'Äôs own fascination with heroism on the high seas and the valor of underappreciated figures like Conyngham drives the story forward, allowing readers to engage deeply with the protagonist's journey. This book is highly recommended for readers who possess a fervent interest in historical fiction, naval adventures, or the Revolutionary War. Barnes's enthralling prose and meticulous attention to detail will captivate enthusiasts and casual readers alike, offering an immersive experience into a time when the fate of nations rested within the hands of daring individuals.

The first in a trilogy about the last emperor of southern Mozambique by one of Africa's most important writers.

Southern Mozambique, 1894. Sergeant Germano de Melo is posted to the village of Nkokolani to oversee the Portuguese conquest of territory claimed by Ngungunyane, the last of the leaders of the state of Gaza, the second-largest empire led by an African. Ngungunyane has raised an army to resist colonial rule and with his warriors is slowly approaching the border village. Desperate for help, Germano enlists Imani, a fifteen-year-old girl, to act as his interpreter. She belongs to the VaChopi tribe, one of the few who dared side with the Portuguese. But while one of her brothers fights for the Crown of Portugal, the other has chosen the African emperor. Standing astride two kingdoms, Imani is drawn to Germano, just as he is drawn to her. But she knows that in a country haunted by violence, the only way out for a woman is to go unnoticed, as if made of shadows or ashes.

Alternating between the voices of Imani and Germano, Mia Couto's Woman of the Ashes combines vivid folkloric prose with extensive historical research to give a spellbinding and unsettling account of war-torn Mozambique at the end of the nineteenth century.

The sinking of the Brig Minerva results in many deaths, while for others, the future is suddenly brighter. But it’s not always easy to leave the past behind…
Felicia Oakes is the illegitimate daughter of… well, someone or other. A pirate, perhaps, or a spy, or a royal prince… who knows? Her vivid imagination conjures a myriad possibilities, all more exciting than her position as governess to two motherless children. But when their father is drowned aboard the Brig Minerva, Felicia must take them to their new guardian in the North of England, where her life is about to be turned upside down.
The Earl of Finlassan has turned his back on the world to pursue his art, and the prospective guardianship of two young girls horrifies him. He soon finds that it’s not his wards who unsettle his life, it’s their governess, who is irritatingly impertinent with a distractingly mischievous smile. Gradually he finds himself drawn out of seclusion by his new muse. But when danger strikes, they will have to uncover the past before they can look to the future.
This is a complete story with a HEA. Book 4 of a 6 book series. A traditional Regency romance, drawing room rather than bedroom.
