Includes two new chapters! “One of the more interesting and better books on military aviation to appear in the last few years.”—Journal of Military History   Since the publication of the first edition of Why Air Forces Fail, the debate over airpower’s role in military operations has only intensified. Here, eminent historians Robin Higham and Stephen J. Harris assemble a team of experts to add essential new details to their cautionary tale for current practitioners of aerial warfare. Together, the contributors examine the complex, often deep-seated, reasons for the catastrophic failures of the Russian, Polish, French, British, Italian, German, Argentine, and American air services. Complemented by reading lists and suggestions for further research, this seminal study with two new chapters provides an essential and detailed analysis of defeat.   “Contains many interesting insights and interpretations . . . an excellent introduction to the study of military failure in general and air forces in particular.”—Journal of America’s Military Past “I recommend this book to those who are interested in air forces and air power, whether amateur or professional, past, present and future.”—Richard Cobbold, Bryanston: The Yearbook   “Provides an excellent analysis of the root causes of failure; this engaging study goes far beyond the aerial battlefield to examine the circumstances leading to defeat.”—Dennis Drew, Colonel, USAF (Ret.)

“Rich insights into how one country has dealt with perhaps the most central issue for any human society: the health and wellbeing of its citizens.” —The Lancet

This volume examines important aspects of China’s century-long search to provide appropriate and effective health care for its people. Four subjects—disease and healing, encounters and accommodations, institutions and professions, and people’s health—organize discussions across case studies of schistosomiasis, tuberculosis, mental health, and tobacco and health.

Among the book’s significant conclusions are the importance of barefoot doctors in disseminating western medicine; the improvements in medical health and services during the long Sino-Japanese war; and the important role of the Chinese consumer. This is a thought-provoking read for health practitioners, historians, and others interested in the history of medicine and health in China.

Certified soundscapes from tinnitus retraining therapy (TRT)Tinnitus describes unpleasant sounds in the ear that do not come from an external source. Everyone affected hears a different personal "sound". Some may hear whistling while others hear buzzing or roaring. What all these noises have in common is that they are perceived as a nuisance and impair the sufferer's quality of life. Tinnitus is usually triggered by stress, increasing age, or tense neck and jaw muscles. Wet weather, stress, and certain head movements can make the buzzing and whistling in the ear even worse. One thing applies to every type of tinnitus: The more attention you pay to the noise, the louder and more annoying it gets – and the more deeply entrenched it becomes in the brain's auditory cortex. Systematic acoustic distraction is therefore almost always an important factor in recovery. Most tinnitus sufferers find sounds aimed at masking the tinnitus much more pleasant than the constant whistling in the ear. This is because covering, or "masking" the sounds with specially composed soundscapes relaxes the entire nervous system and breaks down the highly detrimental fixation on the irritating noise.Based on tinnitus retraining therapy (TRT), the certified applications were developed by researchers, doctors, and sound engineers. These pieces (each lasting 60 minutes) make use of groundbreaking neuroscientific knowledge from the Tinnitus Research Center to facilitate a systematic healing process. The underlying principle is quite simple: The soundscapes minimize the volume of the tinnitus in the auditory system and make the brain block out the disruptive noise. This enables you to ignore the tinnitus, which ceases to be a nuisance or may even disappear altogether. All you need is:- Your smartphone, tablet, or notebook;- One of the six soundscapes in outstanding audio quality that were specially developed for treating tinnitus;- Stereo headphones: Wherever possible, please use high-quality products with good sound. This simple method allows you to push the tinnitus into the background and counteract any fixation on the noise. At the same time, you minimize the stressful physical and psychological "alarm reaction" that makes tinnitus such a problem.Get well soon!--Keywords: tinnitus masking, tinnitus relief, tinnitus music, relieving tinnitus, tinnitus meditation, tinnitus hypnosis, masking tinnitus

Global health is a field that aims to improve health and achieve equity in health for people around the world. It involves understanding health issues that go beyond national boundaries and are influenced by conditions in various parts of the globe. The primary goal of global health is to reduce health disparities and enhance well-being on an international level by examining how diseases spread, what factors affect health, and the most effective methods to improve public health outcomes.

Global health is defined as the study, research, and practice that focuses on improving health and promoting health equity for all populations across the world. It takes a collaborative approach that involves multiple disciplines to address health challenges globally, striving to reduce inequalities in health outcomes.

The importance of global health lies in its role in preventing and controlling diseases that can affect populations worldwide. Health issues like infectious diseases do not recognize national borders, and global health efforts are essential in minimizing their spread and impact. The field also emphasizes reducing differences in health outcomes among populations by working to ensure that all people have access to necessary healthcare services, regardless of where they live or their economic situation.

Hard to imagine now, but there have been times and places where just wearing sandals could get you labeled as being in rebellion against established society. Two such places were Berkeley, California in the early 1960s and Millthorpe, England in the 1880s. Millthorpe was home to Edward Carpenter (1844-1929), an English socialist poet, philosopher, and activist who abandoned his upper crust life and university sinecure to grow market vegetables and handcraft sandals for a living. Carpenter’s search for the well-lived life, his passions and concerns resonate uncannily with the mood of long ago Berkeley. In this frank memoir, Carpenter explores how he “escaped from the domination of Civilization in its two most fatal and much-detested forms, respectability and cheap intellectualism.” - Summary by Sue Anderson
