Antibiotics are powerful drugs that can prevent and treat infections, but they are becoming less effective as a result of drug resistance. Resistance develops because the bacteria that antibiotics target can evolve ways to defend themselves against these drugs. When antibiotics fail, there is very little else to prevent an infection from spreading.

Unnecessary use of antibiotics in both humans and animals accelerates the evolution of drug-resistant bacteria, with potentially catastrophic personal and global consequences. Our best defenses against infectious disease could cease to work, surgical procedures would become deadly, and we might return to a world where even small cuts are life-threatening. The problem of drug resistance already kills over one million people across the world every year and has huge economic costs. Without action, this problem will become significantly worse.

Following from their work on the Review on Antimicrobial Resistance, William Hall, Anthony McDonnell, and Jim O'Neill outline the major systematic failures that have led to this growing crisis. They also provide a set of solutions to tackle these global issues that governments, industry, and public health specialists can adopt.

    Segregation by Design - Local...

Segregation by Design draws on more than 100 years of quantitative and qualitative data from thousands of American cities to explore how local governments generate race and class segregation. Starting in the early twentieth century, cities have used their power of land use control to determine the location and availability of housing, amenities (such as parks), and negative land uses (such as garbage dumps). The result has been segregation—first within cities and more recently between them. Documenting changing patterns of segregation and their political mechanisms, Trounstine argues that city governments have pursued these policies to enhance the wealth and resources of white property owners at the expense of people of color and the poor. Contrary to leading theories of urban politics, local democracy has not functioned to represent all residents. The result is unequal access to fundamental local services—from schools, to safe neighborhoods, to clean water.

A new wind is blowing ... and the future is radically open, says the eminent philosopher, professor and author of the now-classic Religions of Man (republished as The World's Religions, HarperSanFrancisco 1992), as he recalls his spiritual roots and points to a new balance between the worlds of science and mysticism.

Software Engineering Fundamentals is distinctive in its reportage of such subject matters as real-time software design, software metrics, reliability, planning, testing and integration, cost and schedule estimation, human factors, process sizing, quality assurance, technical management, and risk management.
If one takes a look regressively back and indulge into more abstract and theoretical facades of some of the programming language, he may find two reasons to get familiar with it. Initially, these factors almost always dictate critical decisions as to what instruments to use and when to implement. People don't intend to engage in using the inaccurate technology for a piece of work, provided they are devoting themselves to create a large software platform. Besides, tools that are different can keep taking considerable time to settle down. If one has to opt for a new device that is radically different from what he is accustomed to, comprehending the basic principles will ensure a smooth transition.

This live recording with Robert Hand is one of the best references to learn about the planetary aspects in one's birth chart, and to stay abreast of the meanings of the planetary transits to one's natal chart, special event chart, relocation chart, and even the chart of the date one moves into a new residence. One can correlate events with the positions of the transiting planets to one's planetary aspects in each of these kinds of timed charts.
