Beschreibung

"I recommend this book wholeheartedly to new music lovers" Sir Charles Groves CBE Thanks to Nigel Kennedy and Pavarotti, millions of people have recently discovered that classical music is a highly enjoyable experience, perhaps contrary to their expectations. But the world of classical music can be highly intimidating and confusing. Ian Christians, for many years a passionate believer in broadening the interest in classical music, has developed a unique approach, designed to make it as easy as possible for both newcomers to classical music and those who have started down the path to explore with confidence. Discovering Classical Music concentrates on the greatest composers. The author takes you step-by-step into their most approachable music and, in some cases, boldly into some of the greatest works traditionally considered too difficult for newcomers. Rarely does a book offer such potential for continued enjoyment. This volume concentrates on the life, personality and music of Edward William Elgar.

“For decades, Black women have taken on pioneering management roles in television newsrooms across the country. The women were, and still are, bold, brave and unwilling to yield to the status quo. Dr. Ava Thompson Greenwell opens the door to the ugliness of racial animus that greeted them as they climbed the ranks. In raw, soul-baring interviews Dr. Greenwell documents the toll racism and gender bias have taken on their professional and personal lives and she documents these women’s strategies to overcome while demanding that their voices and lived experiences be more fairly represented in news coverage.”
Lyne Pitts, former NBC News Vice President, former CBS News Executive Producer
“Dr. Greenwell’s labor of love, Ladies Leading: The Black Women Who Control Television News reveals how the tentacles of White Supremacy operate in newsroom culture.  She highlights the continued struggle and triumphs of Black women leaders of journalism in newsrooms across the country. She tells us how Black women news managers are most vulnerable and courageous in their fight to include marginalized perspectives of news and information.  This book is important, timely, and critical for anyone who wants to better understand Black women’s contributions to the journalism profession from Ida B. Wells and other leading journalists of her time, to the present.”
Dr. Libby Lewis, Professor of Media Studies, Communications, Sociology, Gender and Sexuality Studies, and Pan African Studies at California State University, Los Angeles and author of The Myth of Post-Racialism in Television News (© 2016)

As huge and prominent as it appears to us, our planet and solar system are but small parts of our galaxy, a massive assembly that spatters the sky with billions of stars and that extends away from us for tens of thousands of light years. And this galaxy of ours is in turn but a small portion of the universe of trillions of other galaxies that reaches outward for billions of light years, back to the dawn of time. This course places our local solar system into the greater context to show where it all came from and what its fate may be. We will study our sun and its interior, learn about stellar red giants, white dwarfs, neutron stars, and black holes, and encounter the mysteries of dark matter and dark energy. We explore the natures of the stars, what different kinds there are, what makes them shine, how they are born, and how they die, some with a whimper, others with explosions that rock the cosmos. We then look to our galaxy of stars, and then to the great variety of other galaxies, to their clusters, and to their fiery interactions and collisions. Finally, we encounter the universe as a whole, the collection of all there is, which is still expanding from its Big Bang origin of nearly 14 billion years ago.
