Summary

This “searing and persuasive exposé of the American health care system” demonstrates the disastrous consequences of putting profit before people (Kirkus Reviews, starred review).

In this timely and important book, Mike Magee, M.D., sends out a “Code Blue” —an urgent medical emergency—for the American medical industry itself. A former hospital administrator and Pfizer executive, he has spent years investigating the pillars of our health system: Big Pharma, insurance companies, hospitals, the American Medical Association, and anyone affiliated with them.

Code Blue is a riveting, character-driven narrative that draws back the curtain on the giant industry that consumes one out of every five American dollars. Making clear for the first time the mechanisms, greed, and collusion by which our medical system was built over the last eight decades. He persuasively argues for a single-payer, multi-plan insurance arena of the kind enjoyed by every other major developed nation.

With the rise of a pandemic of a global scale comes the destruction of the economy. As more people must stay home and isolate while medical practices become overwhelmed, the decline of economic standing can be seen. When people are staying home, the economy is not being stimulated by the incoming money and many businesses must close. COVID-19 has taken its toll on both the health and the economic sectors, leaving destruction in its wake. Economy Was Broken by the Coronavirus aims to show European business leaders and politicians how they can build better practices as the pandemic comes to a close. With this guide, business can prepare for a collapse should another pandemic arise. As it currently stands, the unemployment rate due to COVID-19 is rising. In this quarter alone the rate is expected to jump from 20% to 35%. By studying better practices and how other countries are handling the pandemic, business leaders can learn how they can best protect their company and their people. In Economy Was Broken by the Coronavirus, business will be shown aspects of planning to consider should a situation like the Coronavirus ever occur again. These aspects include: -Creating solutions and guidelines around health and safety that are clearly worded and communicated to ensure both company and public understanding.-The creation of effective local plans that are ready to be acted upon should a situation arise. -Ensuring consistent steps that are followed through every day to avoid a lapse in effectiveness.Businesses and politicians need to be better equipped to deal with the possibility of an uncertain global economy.

An accessible discussion of ways to achieve a sustainable future

In a highly readable account, venture capitalist, entrepreneur, engineer, and philosopher Tom Rand looks to contemporary psychology, economics, business, and finance to explain our stasis in the face of one of the most fundamental problems of our time: why climate disruption might just be our very own pot of hot water and we, the frog, paralyzed in our inaction. But his account doesn’t just point fingers at the bad guys, it goes deeper — to our motivations, institutional lethargy, and deeply buried assumptions about market economics.

Waking the Frog is as much about solutions as it is an account of our present paralysis. Our ingenuity, technology, capital, and policy can work together to turn down the heat and simultaneously enable the largest economic opportunity of the 21st century.
