Sinossi

While Homer's existence as a historical person is still a topic of debate, the writings attributed to the name have made their mark not only on Greek history and literature, but upon western civilization itself. Homer's epic poems, The Iliad and The Odyssey, laid the foundation upon which Ancient Greece developed not only its culture, but its societal values, religious beliefs, and practice of warfare as well.

This publication features the Samuel Butler translation, and while it strays from the poetic style reproduced by more well known translators like Robert Fagles and Robert Fitzgerald, the vision of the epics as if they were prose found in modern novels take their best form under Butler's most capable hand.

Join a carnival of characters including Bez from Happy Mondays, Jorge Louis Borges, and a medieval pilgrim on a journey to buy a PlayStation, in McCabe's sixth and most daring collection. Part-written in Scouse dialect and invented languages, Hedonism offsets the comic with the elegiac in a spectral and polyphonic work exploring the intersection of grief, place, memory and imagination.
This is a book where haunted pasts and futures collide; in a post-Brexit landscape, through cities both imagined and real, McCabe's poems merge through timeslips and ghostly encounters, all the time electrified by the great connector of language at its most radical and unruly. These incandescent poems surge and resist expectation and formula – declaring "can it be, after all, that hedonism is the only activism?"

'After thousands of years, I have a mouth… So if you don't mind, Mum, Dad, I'm going to speak. I'm going to shout. When I become a human I'm going to use some words. Can you still hear me? Is my microphone on?'
Young people have inherited a burning world. In Jordan Tannahill's urgent and lyrical play, they reckon with the generations who have come before them, questioning the choices that have been made, and the ones that they will yet be forced to make.
In Is My Microphone On? an ensemble of young performers hold the audience to account, and invite them to experience the world together anew.
The play was commissioned by the Theater der Welt festival in Germany, premiered in English by Canadian Stage, Toronto, in 2021, and performed by youth theatres across the UK as part of the 2023 National Theatre Connections Festival. It offers opportunities for a large, flexible cast of any size or mix of genders, and can incorporate chorus work, movement and music.

'She made some very poor decisions. You tried to warn her. You love her yet, and that's a credit to you, but you need to think about what's best for Scotland...'
It's 1567. James Melville is an intelligent, charismatic and skilled diplomat – and also one of the most loyal servants of Mary Stuart, the troubled Queen of Scots. It's a time of political turmoil, and the shocking crimes he has witnessed have shaken him.
Now he needs to decide who's guilty, who's innocent, and who is too dangerous to accuse. Change is coming, but at what price?
Mary is an explosive political thriller, and part of Rona Munro's breathtaking theatrical exploration of Scottish history. It is the sixth instalment of The James Plays Cycle which began with James I, II and III, performed by National Theatre of Scotland, including a run at the National Theatre in London, and which won the Evening Standard and Writers' Guild of Great Britain Awards in 2014, and James IV, co-produced by Raw Material and Capital Theatres in association with National Theatre of Scotland, in 2022.
Mary received its world premiere at Hampstead Theatre, London, also in 2022, directed by Roxana Silbert.

This is a love story unlike any you have ever read. Join Mark Caan on his journey to save his soul. After a brush with death, he confesses to an unthinkable crime. A crime that could send him to jail for the rest of his life. His confession takes us back to his freshman year in college. There he meets and falls in love with Byron, a charismatic anti-war protester. Together they form a relationship that challenges the norms of what love means and to what ends it will take them.
The times are chaotic. It is 1968. The Vietnam war dominates the airwaves. The nightly news brings the war’s death and destruction into America’s living rooms with vivid details while the ominous threat of the draft haunts every young man’s psyche. The hippie culture is emerging and confronting the establishment head on. Anti-war protests are taking place on Main streets and college campuses across the country. Old perceptions about love, sex, drugs and war are all being challenged. After decades of struggle, and with the assassination of Bobby Kennedy and Dr. King, the civil rights movement is reaching a combustible crescendo.
As this historic backdrop unfolds, Mark and Byron must navigate their undeniable sexual attraction.
As Mark’s poignant confession gradually unfolds, it reveals a love that is layered with strength, sensuality, regret and forgiveness.
Now, twenty years later, as Mark is confessing to his pastor, all the emotions of a life lived in grief and regret are exposed. His haunting and powerful story aches with longing. A longing for his youthful naivety and absolute commitment to a love that knows no limits.
You will laugh and cry as Mark’s words spill from his heart. And finally, as a witness, you will cheer at his boundless love, and what it can achieve, even in the face of absolute resistance.

Poetry. A form of words that seems so elegantly simple in one verse and so cleverly complex in another. Each poet has a particular style, an individual and unique way with words and yet each of us seems to recognise the path and destination of where the verses lead, even if sometimes the full comprehension may be a little beyond us.

Through the centuries every culture has produced verse to symbolize and to describe everything from everyday life, natural wonders, the human condition and even in its more hubristic moments, the crushing triumph of an enemy.

In the volumes of this series, we take a look at poetry through the prism of individual regions of England, or sometimes more quaintly known as ‘Albion’, or ‘Blighty’, through the centuries of its gloried history.

England, despite its perception of reserve and under-statement has, in reality, strode the global stage at various time in many things, both good and bad, from Empire to long distance running. Here our focus in on its literature. Famed for its fiction and dramas, it is equally admired for its plethora of gifted poets and the dazzling verse which has added so much to its artistic legacy. These classic poets are wonders of their age and of their art. Genius is written in their names.

In this volume we explore the West Midlands, land-locked, yet containing its second largest city, it is a cornucopia of landscapes and contrasts that make it distinct and yet a part of the whole. And whether the poets are famous or obscure their talents remind us all of our inheritance of words.
