Sinopse

Democracy came into the Western World to the tune of sweet, soft music. There was, at the start, no harsh bawling from below; there was only a dulcet twittering from above. Democratic man thus began as an ideal being, full of ineffable virtues and romantic wrongs—in brief, as Rousseau’s noble savage in smock and jerkin, brought out of the tropical wilds to shame the lords and masters of the civilized lands. The fact continues to have important consequences to this day. It remains impossible, as it was in the Eighteenth Century, to separate the democratic idea from the theory that there is a mystical merit, an esoteric and ineradicable rectitude, in the man at the bottom of the scale—that inferiority, by some strange magic, becomes a sort of superiority—nay, the superiority of superiorities. Everywhere on earth, save where the enlightenment of the modern age is confessedly in transient eclipse, the movement is toward the completer and more enamoured enfranchisement of the lower orders. Down there, one hears, lies a deep, illimitable reservoir of righteousness and wisdom, unpolluted by the corruption of privilege. What baffles statesmen is to be solved by the people, instantly and by a sort of seraphic intuition. Their yearnings are pure; they alone are capable of a perfect patriotism; in them is the only hope of peace and happiness on this lugubrious ball. The cure for the evils of democracy is more democracy!

Max Beer's book "The Life and Teaching of Karl Marx" is a comprehensive biography of the famous German philosopher, economist, and social theorist, Karl Marx. The book explores Marx's life and ideas in great detail, from his early childhood in Trier, Germany, to his intellectual development and eventual rise to prominence as one of the most influential thinkers of the 19th century.
Beer begins by discussing Marx's early years, including his upbringing in a family of Jewish descent and his education at the University of Bonn and the University of Berlin. From there, he traces Marx's intellectual journey, from his early interest in Hegelian philosophy to his later involvement in socialist and communist politics.
The book also explores the key ideas and theories that Marx developed throughout his career, including his concept of historical materialism, his critique of capitalism, and his vision of a classless society. Beer examines these ideas in detail, providing historical context and explaining their significance both in Marx's time and in the years since.
Throughout the book, Beer emphasizes the political and social context in which Marx lived and worked. He discusses the rise of industrial capitalism in Europe, the development of socialist and communist movements, and the political struggles that shaped Marx's ideas and career.
Overall, "The Life and Teaching of Karl Marx" provides a thorough and insightful exploration of one of the most important figures in modern history. It offers a valuable perspective on Marx's life, ideas, and legacy, and is an essential read for anyone interested in political philosophy, economics, or social theory.

At a moment of crisis and pessimism for American conservatives, David Frum offers fresh ideas—and fresh hope. Not in a generation has conservatism been in as much trouble as it is at the end of the Bush years. A majority of Americans say the country is "on the wrong track." Voters prefer Democrats over Republicans on almost every issue, including taxes. The married, the middle-class, the native-born are dwindling as a share of the population, while Democratic blocs are rising. A generation of young people has turned its back on the Republican party.Too many conservatives and Republicans have shut their eyes to negative trends. David Frum offers answers.Frum says that the ideas that won elections for conservatives in the 1980s have done their job. Republicans can no longer win elections on taxes, guns, and promises to restore traditional values. It's time now for a new approach, including:—A conservative commitment to making private-sector health insurance available to every American—Lower taxes on savings and investment financed by higher taxes on energy and pollution—Federal policies to encourage larger families—Major reductions in unskilled immigration—A genuinely compassionate conservatism, including a conservative campaign for prison reform and government action against the public health disaster of obesity—A new conservative environmentalism that promotes nuclear power in place of coal and oil—Higher ethical standards inside the conservative movement and the Republican party—A renewed commitment to expand and rebuild the armed forces of the United States—to crush terrorism—and get ready for the coming challenge from China.Frum's previous bestselling books have earned accolades for their courage and creativity from liberals and conservatives alike. Today, with the conservative movement and the Republican Party facing their greatest danger since Watergate, Frum has again stepped forward with new ideas to take conservatism—and America—into a new century of greatness.

In 1993 Greg Mortenson was the exhausted survivor of a failed attempt to ascend K2, an American climbing bum wandering emaciated and lost through Pakistan's Karakoram Himalaya. After he was taken in and nursed back to health by the people of an impoverished Pakistani village, Mortenson promised to return one day and build them a school. From that rash, earnest promise grew one of the most incredible humanitarian campaigns of our time—Greg Mortenson's one-man mission to counteract extremism by building schools, especially for girls, throughout the breeding ground of the Taliban.Award-winning journalist David Oliver Relin has collaborated on this spellbinding account of Mortenson's incredible accomplishments in a region where Americans are often feared and hated. In pursuit of his goal, Mortenson has survived kidnapping, fatwas issued by enraged mullahs, repeated death threats, and wrenching separations from his wife and children. But his success speaks for itself. At last count, his Central Asia Institute had built fifty-five schools. Three Cups of Tea is at once an unforgettable adventure and the inspiring true story of how one man really is changing the world—one school at a time.

    Sovereignty - Organized Hypocrisy

The acceptance of human rights and minority rights, the increasing role of international financial institutions, and globalization have led many observers to question the continued viability of the sovereign state. Here a leading expert challenges this conclusion. Stephen Krasner contends that states have never been as sovereign as some have supposed. Throughout history, rulers have been motivated by a desire to stay in power, not by some abstract adherence to international principles. Organized hypocrisy--the presence of longstanding norms that are frequently violated--has been an enduring attribute of international relations. Political leaders have usually but not always honored international legal sovereignty, the principle that international recognition should be accorded only to juridically independent sovereign states, while treating Westphalian sovereignty, the principle that states have the right to exclude external authority from their own territory, in a much more provisional way. In some instances violations of the principles of sovereignty have been coercive, as in the imposition of minority rights on newly created states after the First World War or the successor states of Yugoslavia after 1990; at other times cooperative, as in the European Human Rights regime or conditionality agreements with the International Monetary Fund. The author looks at various issues areas to make his argument: minority rights, human rights, sovereign lending, and state creation in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Differences in national power and interests, he concludes, not international norms, continue to be the most powerful explanation for the behavior of states.
