Breaking down the barriers to artistic expression, empowering the reader to pick up a pen, look inside, and let the words flow. Encouraging them to brave the darkness and to discover the light. From the author, ‘I called this book, ‘Bound to the Wings of a Butterfly’, as a play on the old chaos theory adage, that suggests that small events can have large scale and unpredictable impacts upon the future. Each of the poems within, harks back to such events: childhood neglect, abuse, fear, and confusion. On a universal scale, these events are so personal as to be seemingly irrelevant. Yet, in my small world, they left a lasting mark that continues to reverberate into the future. They are the direct, or indirect, cause of the poems within this book. They are also responsible for me choosing to share it publicly. I write to heal. I share my work to help others recover, connect, grow, and create for themselves. I share to reduce the stigma around mental illness. I share to normalise the exploration of the complex mazes that are our inner worlds. Thus, there is a direct causal link between the events of my past, and you reading these words right now. If this book moves, compels, encourages, changes, or impacts you in any way, however subtly, that impact will reverberate outwardly and forever into the future. Who knows what impact those butterfly wings will have?’

  Life, unpredictable, yields return for sacrifices made. Departing from the conventional path, I surrendered much to existence. Pain, a constant companion, birthed verse—each line a product of anguish turned art. In the ebb and flow of life's challenges, I found solace in writing. What emerged were rhythmic verses, transforming suffering into poetry. Some reflect, others introspect; some offer insight, and others observe. Regardless, each verse is a product of life's trials and emotions. Surprisingly, these verses multiplied over the years. Today, I share them not for accolades, but to be heard amidst the chaos. Some stories must be told, some silences shattered. I offer my rhymes openly, a reflection, a token of my journey.

  80-something Dan Yamada has been rendered speechless after a stroke, and as he lies in bed, he vividly recalls his life, from his days in the World War 2-era internment camps, to serving in the US Army, to his one true love. At his bedside in the present, his adult children fight over his care and legacy, all while Dan tries to communicate his poignant final wish.

  Please make me pretty, I don't want to die explores tactility, sound, sensuality, and intimacy. Set across the four seasons of a year, these fresh and original poems by Tawanda Mulalu combine an inviting confessional voice and offbeat imagery, and offer an appealing mixture of seriousness and humor. 
   
   
   
  The speaker of these poems probes romantic and interracial intimacy, the strangeness and difficulty of his experiences as a diasporic Black African in White America, his time working as a teacher's assistant in a third-grade classroom, and his ambivalent admiration for canonical poets who have influenced him, especially Sylvia Plath. Juxtaposing traditional forms such as sonnets and elegies with less orthodox interjections, such as prose-poem "prayers" and other meditations, the collection presents a poetic world both familiar and jarring—one in which history, the body, and poetry can collide in a single surprising turn of image: "The stars also suffer. Immense and dead, their gasses burn / distant like castanets of antebellum teeth. My open window / a synecdoche of country."

  When Kevin Powell's elderly mother became ill, he returned home ever week to take her grocery shopping in Jersey City. Walking behind her during those trips, Powell began to hear her voice, stories, and language in a new way—and examined his own healing while praying for hers. 
   
  Grocery Shopping with My Mother originated as social media posts about these visits and evolved into a breathtaking collection of thirty-two new poems, crafted like an album, plus four bonus tracks celebrating a great love of wordplay.  
   
  Culturally rooted in the literary traditions of Ntozake Shange and Allen Ginsberg, Powell’s poems honor the likes of V (formerly Eve Ensler), bell hooks, and Sidney Poitier.
