Sinopse

"The Horror at Red Hook" is a short story written by H. P. Lovecraft. The story begins with Detective Malone describing an on-duty incident at Red Hook, Brooklyn, that gave him a phobia of large buildings. Back-tracking to where it all began, Red Hook is described in detail, with its gangs and crime, and suggesting at an occult underbelly.

The "case of Robert Suydam" is then told to be the driving force behind Malone's federally ordered involvement at Red Hook. Suydam's demeanor changes suddenly. Known as a shabby recluse, he is seen around town looking younger and more radiant. News arrives of his engagement to a well-to-do woman, while at the same time, there is an increase in local kidnappings. A police raid, involving Malone, uncovers nothing useful from Suydam's Red Hook flat save a few strange inscriptions.

After Suydam's wedding, he and his bride leave on a ship. A scream is heard and when the crew enter Suydam's stateroom, they find him and his wife dead, with claw-marks on his wife's body. Malone enters Suydam's flat to see what he can find. In the basement, he comes across a door that breaks open and sucks him inside, revealing a hellish landscape. Malone is found in the basement of Suydam's flat, which has caved in inexplicably above him, killing everyone else inside. The tunnels and chambers uncovered in the raids are filled in and cemented, though as Malone recounts, Red Hook never changes.

Habeas Corpus Delicti In the shadowy corridors of justice, where power and privilege collide, defense attorney James Stratton reigns supreme. Known for his razor-sharp intellect and unyielding determination, James has made a name defending the indefensible—criminals who walk free on technicalities and legal maneuvering. But when a series of gruesome murders begin targeting defense attorneys, his mastery of the system becomes his greatest liability. Each victim is discovered in a church, their body posed beneath the Scales of Justice and a note pinned to their chest declaring: “Verdict: Guilty.” For James, it’s business as usual—until he receives a cryptic letter: “Your verdict is coming.” At first dismissing it as a crank’s threat, James’s confidence begins to falter as the body count rises, and a chilling pattern emerges. As he delves deeper into the mystery, James is forced to confront his own past, particularly a high-profile case where justice may have been traded for a courtroom victory. With the help of Sarah Blake, his morally conflicted associate, and a weary detective who doubts James’s innocence, the trio unravels a web of vengeance rooted in betrayal and loss. The killer’s obsession with justice reveals a dangerous paradox: is this a crusade against corruption, or the work of a deranged mind exacting revenge? As the killer closes in, James must confront the harsh truths about his career, his choices, and the lives left shattered in his wake. Habeas Corpus Delicti is a gripping thriller that explores the fragile line between justice and vengeance, forcing readers to question the true cost of defending the guilty—and whether redemption is ever truly possible.

“In his masterly reworking of this powerful myth, Hillerman creates a kachina for contemporary times. . . . No wonder Hillerman’s stories never grow old. Like myths, they keep evolving with the telling.”— New York Times Book Review
From the enduring ""national and literary cultural sensation"" (Los Angeles Times) Tony Hillerman, a crackling tale of myth, mystery, and murder featuring the legendary Leaphorn and Chee.
Though he may be retired, Navajo Tribal Police Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn hasn’t lost his curiosity or his edge. He’s eager to help Sergeant Jim Chee and his fiancée Bernie Manuelito with their latest case—clearing an innocent kid accused of robbing a trading post.
Billy Tuve claims he received the precious diamond from a strange old man in the canyon. Could it be one of the gems that went missing in an epic plane crash decades earlier? Now that it may have resurfaced, it’s attracted dangerous strangers to the Navajo lands.
Proving Billy’s innocence won’t be easy. Leaphorn, Chee, and Manuelito must find the remains of a passenger who died in the crash—one of 172 lost souls whose remains were scattered across the magnificent tiered cliffs of the Grand Canyon.
But nature may prove their deadliest adversary. To find the proof they need, the detectives must battle a thunderous monsoon and a killer as they plunge deeper into the dark realm of the Hopi Lord of Death—the guardian of the underworld known as Skeleton Man.

"The Adventure of the Three Garridebs" (1924), one of the 56 Sherlock Holmes short stories written by British author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, is one of 12 stories in the cycle collected as The Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes.
According to Dr. Watson's opening narration, this story is set at "the latter end of June, 1902 ... the same month that Holmes refused a knighthood for services which may perhaps some day be described." This is a parallel to the knighthood of Arthur Conan Doyle around the same time.
Holmes receives a letter from a Nathan Garrideb of 136 Little Ryder Street, asking for help in a most peculiar quest. He is looking for another man with his unusual surname, for it will mean a $5 million inheritance for him. He has been approached by another man, John Garrideb of Kansas, who says that he needs to find others with the same last name.
