Michael Winner's new book Tales I Never Told! is scurrilous, affectionate and sometimes sensational! Winner's tales have a cast including Simon Cowell, Sir Michael Caine, Marlon Brando, Burt Lancaster, Faye Dunaway and many others of great fame and even some of less fame. The tales recount things that have happened in Winner's life. This is a man who lived with the stars and lived through extraordinary experiences. The book is a dazzling mix of genuine food 'expertise' - from the man who says he knows nothing about food but is arguably the most read food columnist in the world - and acerbic wit in telling the stories with which Michael has entertained his friends for years. Winner is full of surprises, none greater than when he married his long-time girlfriend Geraldine Lynton-Edwards in September 2011. His life has been extraordinary. At age fourteen he had a show column in twenty-seven newspapers. He was at Cambridge aged seventeen and came out with an Honours Degree in law and economics at twenty. He was, for a while, the youngest movie director in the English-speaking language. His career included decades in Hollywood and the producing and/or directing of some of the most famous films of the twentieth century, including the Death Wish series. His fi lms have been shown at the Venice, San Francisco and Cannes film festivals. In early 2011, the American Cinematheque in Los Angeles mounted a three-day tribute to him showing six of his movies, with Michael giving his well-known one-man show on one evening and speaking between movies on the others. He became a food critic by accident but has nevertheless been writing in the Sunday Times for over sixteen years. He has never missed a week - even when he was in intensive care and heavily dosed with morphine. The book also includes the last year of his Sunday Times reviews to bring people up to date with what is going on in that arena.

Bill loved music. It was a big part of his life and his comedy. He wrote many songs over the years and often traveled with his guitar while he was on his comedy tours. After shows, in his hotel room, he would play his guitar and write songs. After Bill died his family found boxes of songs Bill had recorded. To honor Bill’s love for music, the tapes were taken to Abbey Road studios in London where they were re-mastered. Lo-Fi Troubadour contains 17 original Bill Hicks’ songs, 6 of those being released for the first time here.

    The Reluctant Escapologist -...

    Mike Bradwell

An unrivalled unofficial history of the rise – and partial fall – of fringe theatre, Mike Bradwell's deadpan account of his adventures is one of the funniest and angriest books to come out of theatre today. Winner of the 2010 Theatre Book Prize awarded by the Society for Theatre Research.
As he travels through a counterculture peopled by nutters, chancers, dreamers and prophets, Bradwell makes us marvel at his resilience and creativity, captured in a succession of vivid – and often laugh-out- loud – episodes such as: creating a character with Mike Leigh; enjoying the onstage mass orgasms of The Living Theatre; eating fire with Bob Hoskins; becoming an underwater escapologist (reluctantly) in the Ken Campbell Roadshow; creating Hull Truck; and doing battle with the Health and Safety brigade, the funding bodies and a Polish heavy-metal disco during his ten years running the famous Bush Theatre in West London.
Bradwell is a passionate champion of the alternative as well as an admired and successful director. He makes a compelling – and urgent – case for preserving the true and subversive spirit of theatre from castration at the hands of bankers, consultants, stakeholders, cultural-diversity compliance monitors and the Arts Council.
'Towards the end of this brilliant account of his epic forty-year journey, Mike tells us, 'I don't believe that theatre is safe in the hands of grown-ups', and it is his healthy, eternal youthfulness that makes the book so inspiring' Mike Leigh, from his Foreword
'Inimitably filthy, achingly funny... Bradwell is one of the most colourful figures in theatre today' - Ian Herbert - The Stage
'Both a history and a pointer to the future of theatre, written by one of its most courageous and effective champions' - Theatres Magazine
'Funny and rude, bloody-minded and undervalued, much like the theatre to which he has given his all' - Times Literary Supplement
