Summary

Petite Messe Solennelle (Messa Solenne) for choir SATB and Orchestra. Rossini composed the Petite messe solennelle in 1863, 34 years after writing his last opera, in Passy, where he spent the last decades of his life. Rossini and his wife entertained a circle of friends, holding samedi soirs for which he composed several pieces of chamber music, often vocal, which the composer called his péchés de vieillesse (sins of old age). The mass was possibly commissioned by Count Alexis Pillet-Will for his wife Louise to whom it is dedicated, but the musicologist Nancy P. Fleming points out that Rossini may have had reasons of his own to compose it, and dedicated it in response to staging the first performance.
The mass is structured in several extended movements in the tradition of the missa solemnis, but the composer labeled it petite with a grain of irony. He wrote on the last page of the manuscript:
Dear Lord, here it is finished, this poor little mass. Have I just written sacred music, or rather, sacrilegious music? I was born for opera buffa, as you well know. Not much technique, a little bit of heart, that's all. Blessings to you and grant me Paradise.

LibriVox volunteers bring you 18 recordings of There Was a Cherry-Tree by James Whitcomb Riley. This was the Weekly Poetry project for May 13, 2012.Riley began his career writing verses as a sign maker and submitting poetry to newspapers. Thanks in part to an endorsement from poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, he eventually earned successive jobs at Indiana newspaper publishers during the latter 1870s. Riley gradually rose in prominence during the 1880s through his poetry reading tours. He traveled a touring circuit first in the Midwest, and then nationally, holding shows and making joint appearances on stage with other famous talents. Regularly struggling with his alcohol addiction, Riley never married or had children, and was involved in a scandal in 1888 when he became too drunk to perform. He became more popular in spite of the bad press he received, and as a result extricated himself from poorly negotiated contracts that limited his earnings; he quickly became very wealthy. Within the Mystery cultures of ancient history, art, science and religion formed a unity that offered direction and spiritual nourishment to the broader society. Today, art, science and religion can again be reunited. However, as Marie Steiner indicates in her introduction to these lectures, these aspects of our culture need rejuvenation through fresh spiritual understanding and knowledge. Art cannot be renewed through compromise, but only by returning to the spiritual foundations of life. As she says: "The remedy lies in unlocking the wisdom of the Mysteries and presenting it to humanity in a form adapted to contemporary needs." In these wide-ranging lectures, Rudolf Steiner offers spiritual insight for the modern day into a revitalised world of the arts. His themes include: the relation of art to technology, the moral experience of the worlds of colour and music, the legendary Norwegian Dream Song of Olaf Åsteson, and the relationship between the various arts of architecture, sculpture, painting, music, poetry, eurythmy and the human being.

Hollywood is indelibly printed in our minds as the ‘go-to’ place for entertainment and has been for decades. When there really did seem to be more stars in Hollywood than in Heaven Hollywood Stage had them performing films as radio plays – on the sponsors dime of course. Classic films now become audiobooks with many featuring the original stars from way back when. Here's Chained starring Joan Crawford & Franchot Tone.

    WAR - The Unauthorized Biography...

A biography that “captures the runaway-train spirit” of Guns N’ Roses singer Axl Rose and delves into what shaped him as a man and a musician (Kirkus Reviews).

Even in the world of rock and roll, someone like Axl Rose doesn’t come along very often. Mercurial and brilliant, deluded and imperious, Rose defies easy description or analysis. Few people have studied Rose as closely as Mick Wall has. Traveling with Guns N’ Roses and writing about them in the late 1980s and early 1990s, Wall first earned Axl’s trust and later his fury.

W.A.R. goes back to the beginning, revealing Rose’s childhood influences (and how he got his name), and tracking the birth of the band and their enormous success with albums like Appetite for Destruction and Use Your Illusion. With fame and money came substance abuse and infighting, and a lead singer who morphed from eccentric to seemingly unhinged.

Wall’s book is richly detailed and offers surprising new views of a variety of Guns N’ Roses and Axl Rose incidents, including the death of two fans at a concert in England; Rose’s eventual split from every one of the other original band members; fights with perceived enemies like Kurt Cobain, Motley Crue’s Vince Neil and fashion designer Tommy Hilfiger; Rose’s refusal to show up at concerts throughout his career; and his many years as a virtual recluse at his Malibu mansion. W.A.R. is about great music, bad relationships, and the public and private personas of one of the most controversial performers of our time.

“The best rock biography that has ever landed on my desk . . . turns the story of Axl Rose . . . into a profound examination of the pain of fame.” —The Tribune (UK)

“A catalog of lawsuits, sackings, and all-round appalling behavior.” —The Daily Telegraph (UK)

“It’s easy to paint Rose as a wrathful tyrant, but Wall has you sympathizing with [him].” —Entertainment Weekly
