Creativity is a journey with lots of ups and downs, twists and turns. To be creative, one cannot watch from the sidelines. Cathy Wild suggests that there is no set formula for the creative process; there are no steps 1, 2, 3, or A, B, C that guarantee a successful outcome. Each of us is unique, and Wild believes that creativity is our natural state, our birthright. Here she talks about the need to deeply understand ourselves as more than a mental activity. She describes her own process: “Doodling. I do a lot of doodling. [I do] anything that is process oriented that uses the body, that circumvents the thinking mind. . .
While there is a period of discomfort when moving much deeper into the body memory, ultimately there’s an incredible sense of freedom because we’re making space in the body and in the mind for something new, because that memory or that experience that was unprocessed was taking up space and there is not an infinite amount of room. As we get older all these [unprocessed] experiences are stacked up in the body and they accumulate like dark smoke that inhabits the body, and there’s just less and less light, less and less room. And eventually all this unintended energy begins to form a block and gets in the way of healthy expression.” She goes on to talk about what to do when resistance comes up, as well as ways to honor our limits. She gives an example of how she turned “lemons into lemonade” when her publisher backed out of the commitment to publish her book. (hosted by Justine Willis Toms)

Broadway. The Great White Way. In its theatres—one day you’re an understudy, the next a star. Your name in headlines and lights. But Broadway has an underbelly. A troubled side through which to view humanity at its worst: corrupt, dark, venal and violent.

For Detective Danny Clover every time he walked that street another case was always just a few footsteps away. He knows everyone along Broadway—from pan handlers to operatic prima donnas—but he’s still sentimental about the street, forever an ever-changing wonderland of glamour that at any moment is ready to reveal its dark side.

    These are his stories.

Under Milk Wood is Dylan Thomas’s undisputed and unforgettable masterpiece – an affectionate, but hilarious portrait of a small Welsh town. The classic 1954 recording, featuring a perfect cast led by Richard Burton as ‘First Voice’, is rightly considered to be definitive. This collection also includes two earlier radio programmes: Return Journey to Swansea and Quite Early One Morning, read by Dylan Thomas and others. Enjoyable in their own right, they also provide a fascinating insight into the process that led towards Under Milk Wood.

Published to coincide with the 50th anniversary, an in-depth look at the world’s longest running and most successful science fiction show

“The world would be a poorer place without Doctor Who.” —Steven Spielberg

Premiering the day after the JFK assassination, Doctor Who humbly launched one of the entertainment world’s first super-brands. We begin with a look at TV programming of the day and the original pitch documents before delving into the Daleks, which almost didn’t make the cut but inspired many monsters to follow. After three years, First Doctor William Hartnell left, prompting the BBC to recast their hit rather than end it, giving us the first “regeneration” and making TV history. We follow the succession of Doctors—including Third Doctor Jon Pertwee, exiled to Earth and targeted by the Master—and see how the program reflected the feminism of the 1970s while gaining mainstream popularity with Fourth Doctor Tom Baker…until declining support from the BBC eventually led to cancelation. Fan outcry saved the series, only for it to suffer a repeat cancelation. Yet many continued to enjoy the Whoniverse in syndication, novels, audio dramas, and Doctor Who Magazine. Paul McGann impressed many as the Eighth Doctor in a 1996 TV movie, but it failed to reignite the series.

A new age dawned in 2005 with Ninth Doctor Christopher Eccleston and a serious special effects budget before Tenth Doctor David Tennant helped rocket the series to international popularity and a new era of spinoffs. With Eleventh Doctor Matt Smith, the show became a bona fide success in America. For the program’s fiftieth anniversary, Peter Capaldi became the Twelfth Doctor, ushering in yet another era for our unstoppable Time Lord.

Featuring discussions of concepts and characters, with insights from producers, writers, and actors from across the years, here is a rich, behind-the-camera investigation into the dazzling multiverse of Doctor Who.

A remarkable portrait of “true L.A. noir” with archival photos from the Los Angeles Police Museum and text by legendary crime writer James Ellroy (Los Angeles Times).   James Ellroy, the undisputed master of crime writing, has teamed up with the Los Angeles Police Museum to present a stunning text on 1953 L.A. While combing the museum’s photo archives, Ellroy discovered that the year featured a wide array of stark and unusual imagery—and to accompany the pictures, he has written text to illuminate the crimes and law enforcement of the era.   Ellroy offers context along with wild detail and rich atmosphere—this is the cauldron that was police work in the city of the tarnished angels seven decades ago, revealed in more than 80 duotone photos throughout the book.   “These crime images resemble the work of photographer Weegee, but, Ellroy argues, they’re superior because they resist artistry; they were taken by police officers doing their jobs.” —Chicago Tribune
