Sinopse

In "Trails of the Pathfinders," George Bird Grinnell embarks on an evocative exploration of the American wilderness, blending meticulous historical research with his vivid narrative style. Grinnell deftly intertwines the experiences of notable Native American tribes and early explorers, providing a profound commentary on their interactions with the natural landscape. The text is marked by rich descriptions and a keen sensitivity to the indigenous cultures, demonstrating Grinnell's commitment to preserving their legacies amid the encroaching modernity of the early 20th century. This book stands as both a personal testament and a scholarly examination of the American frontier, infusing the reader with a sense of nostalgia for a disappearing world. George Bird Grinnell, a prominent educator, naturalist, and conservationist, was driven by a profound respect for Native American cultures and a desire to document their knowledge of the land. His extensive work with indigenous peoples and his passionate advocacy for wildlife conservation may have inspired him to write this book, aiming not merely to recount the stories of the past but to elevate the voices of those who lived within and shaped it. "Trails of the Pathfinders" is essential reading for enthusiasts of American history, wildlife conservation, and indigenous studies. Grinnell's unique blend of factual rigor and lyrical prose invites readers to embark on a journey through America'Äôs natural and cultural heritage, making it a poignant reminder of the delicate balance between man and nature.

In Finding Truth in Fiction, two media psychologists reveal that there's much more to our desire to seek out stories in film, TV, and books than simple diversion—fiction can help us find truth in our real lives. Whether you consider yourself a fan of popular media or whether you find yourself thinking of a particular fictional scene for inspiration, you are not alone.

Though some assume that interest in a fictional world is a sign of psychological trouble, the authors enthusiastically disagree. Because story worlds are simulations of our social world, we use them to make sense of our experiences and even decide what kind of people we want to be. This makes fiction far from trivial. By exploring our relationship with fictional stories and characters, the authors will examine how we create mental models in our minds so we can understand stories and characters and how we differentiate between the identities of characters and the actors who play them. What story arcs, such as the hero's journey, are we drawn to again and again? How do the moments that strike us as important in a story change as we age and move through different stages in our life?

Delving into these questions and many more, the authors conclude that being a fan is not just healthy, it's human.

After its successful landing at Inchon and capture of Seoul in September 1950, the U.S. X Corps was joined by Eighth Army, and many people expected the two commands to be combined into one. Instead, General MacArthur ordered the X Corps to load onto ships and travel around the peninsula to northeastern Korea and the port city of Wonsan, which the South Korean I Corps had captured. Major elements of X Corps were to move west from their positions in northeast Korea and cut the supply lines of Chinese troops expected to cross the Yalu and confront Eighth Army. Other parts of X Corps would push north toward the border and thus control all of Korea. Neither goal was met.

Escaping the Trap tells what happened when X Corps discovered that the Chinese had crossed the Yalu unseen and marched rapidly to Chosin Reservoir, where they landed a surprise attack against the 1st Marine Division and the army's 31st Regimental Combat Team of the 7th Infantry Division. The Chinese attack in late November 1950 virtually annihilated the 31st RCT east of Chosin, while the 1st Marine Division made an escape through treacherous terrain and a forty-mile roadblock, pushing on to the coast and the monumental evacuation of X Corps from North Korea.

Roy E. Appleman's study of the day-to-day records of X Corps and of published material and his interviews and correspondence with survivors make the whole story of this portion of the Korean War available for the first time.

    #1 New York Times Bestseller!
America's top politicians have discovered the scam to end all scams.
Peter Schweizer has been fighting corruption—and winning—for years. In Throw Them All Out, he exposed insider trading by members of Congress, leading to the passage of the STOCK Act. In Extortion, he uncovered how politicians use mafia-like tactics to enrich themselves. And in Clinton Cash, he revealed the Clintons’ massive money machine and sparked an FBI investigation.
Now he explains how a new corruption has taken hold, involving larger sums of money than ever before. Stuffing tens of thousands of dollars into a freezer has morphed into multibillion-dollar equity deals done in the dark corners of the world.
An American bank opening in China would be prohibited by US law from hiring a slew of family members of top Chinese politicians. However, a Chinese bank opening in America can hire anyone it wants. It can even invite the friends and families of American politicians to invest in can’t-lose deals.
President Donald Trump’s children have made front pages across the world for their dicey transactions. However, the media has barely looked into questionable deals made by those close to Barack Obama, Joe Biden, John Kerry, Mitch McConnell, and lesser-known politicians who have been in the game longer.
In many parts of the world, the children of powerful political figures go into business and profit handsomely, not necessarily because they are good at it, but because people want to curry favor with their influential parents. This is a relatively new phenomenon in the United States. But for relatives of some prominent political families, we may already be talking about hundreds of millions of dollars.
Deeply researched and packed with shocking revelations, Secret Empires identifies public servants who cannot be trusted and provides a path toward a more accountable government.

The little-known true stories of ten British loyalists who fled to Canada during the American Revolution, then came back to try to reclaim their land.

In 1778, New York State Patriots forced colonists loyal to the British government to flee north into what became Ontario and Quebec. Many of the defiant young British Americans soon returned south—as soldiers, spies, and scouts to fight for their multigenerational farms along the Mohawk River, Lake Champlain, and Hudson River Valleys.

Eventually defeated, they were banished from their ancestral homelands forever. In this book, Mark Jodoin offers an enlightened look back at ten young men and women who were forced north into Ontario and Quebec, sharing the struggles these Loyalists faced during our nation’s founding.
