“Makes a compelling case for the importance of Saharan history, both in its own right and in its articulations with the histories of other regions.” —American Ethnologist

The Sahara has long been portrayed as a barrier that divides the Mediterranean world from Africa proper and isolates the countries of the Maghrib from their southern and eastern neighbors. Rather than viewing the desert as an isolating barrier, this volume takes up historian Fernand Braudel’s description of the Sahara as “the second face of the Mediterranean.” The essays recast the history of the region with the Sahara at its center, uncovering a story of densely interdependent networks that span the desert’s vast expanse. They explore the relationship between the desert’s “islands” and “shores” and the connections and commonalities that unite the region. Contributors draw on extensive ethnographic and historical research to address topics such as trade and migration; local notions of place, territoriality, and movement; Saharan cities; and the links among ecological, regional, and world-historical approaches to understanding the Sahara.

Contributions by Dida Badi, Julien Brachet, Armelle Chopin, Charles Grémont, Peregrine Horden, Olivier Leservoisier, Laurence Marfaing, E. Ann McDougall, Abderrahmane Moussaoui, Mohamed Oudada, Fatma Oussedik, and Katia Schörle

“A compilation of coherent, well-structured case studies addressing highly significant issues for the contemporary Sahara . . . a groundbreaking study.” —Social Anthropology

“Altogether, this book is highly recommendable. Its key contribution is in teaching us to conceive of the Sahara not as a region clearly defined by natural features, but as a space that exists, extends, and expands according to its vibrant human interconnectedness.” —Journal of the Royal Anthropological Institute

Daniel O'Connell created the Catholic nation in 1820s Ireland and in the process he gave birth to popular politics.
Ahead of America where Andrew Jackson was creating his own brand of popular politics, O'Connell brought together rich and poor in support of a new phenomenon that became the popular political party.
O'Connell began the shift in power from landed wealth to democratic nationalism. His success was built upon by Charles Stewart Parnell who created the first truly effective political party in the 1880s.
The success of both O'Connell and Parnell was based on the flow of money into their organisations to sustain their political machines. Until now there has been no serious examination of how early nationalists raised money, how they accounted for it and – occasionally – how they misappropriated it.
In telling this story Michael Keyes fills a key gap in our knowledge by showing us that popular funding was the life blood of Irish nationalism and was the key ingredient in a movement that went from political exclusion to political dominance in nineteenth-century Ireland.

While in exile on St Helena, Napoleon dictated a commentary on the wars of Julius Caesar, later published in 1836. In each chapter he summarized the events of one campaign, then added comments from the standpoint of his own military knowledge. Over the nearly two millennia between Caesar and Napoleon some aspects of warfare had changed, notably the introduction of firearms. But much remained the same: the rate of movement of armies (at the foot pace of horse or man); human muscle power as the main source of energy for construction work; some military techniques, notably bridge construction; as well as the actual territory fought over by Caesar and later by Napoleon. Napoleons commentary thus provides a fascinating and highly authoritative insight into Caesars wars, as well as providing a window into Napoleons own thinking and attitudes. Napoleon in places detects mistakes on the part of Caesar and his enemies, and says what they should have done differently. Remarkably, this is thought to be the first full English translation of Napoleon's work.Napoleon Bonaparte was born to an obscure Corsican family but rose through the ranks of the French army to become Emperor of France, conqueror of most of Europe and acknowledged military genius. He wrote this book while in exile on St Helena. The translator. RA Maguire, is a former civil engineer with a long-standing interest in military and ancient history.

Operating Manual for Enlightenment: Recreating Your Mind explores how we see and learn to see the world. It takes you on your own journey into what you consider reality and asks how you can make it better. This journey enters those areas you take for granted: thoughts, sensations, emotions, sense of place, and purpose. The book’s aim is not to explain, but to prepare you for change. Change that you must carry out yourself. Instant Enlightenment will tell you why you must focus on this journey, for your own sake and for the benefit of us all.
We are at a watershed moment in our understanding of the mind, after which psychology will change. Instead of focusing on thoughts and behavior, we are coming to understand that what’s important is what you can think and how you can behave. The Operating Manual is an intellectual, emotional, and neurological road map to the integration you don’t yet have.
