Sinopse

In "Bee Keeping," Frank Benton offers an insightful exploration into the intricate world of apiculture, blending technical expertise with a poetic appreciation for nature. The book is structured to guide both novice and experienced beekeepers through the processes of hive management, the biology of bees, and the ecological significance of beekeeping. Benton's lucid prose and engaging narrative style make complex concepts accessible, moving seamlessly between practical advice and philosophical musings on sustainability and the environment. His work resonates within the broader tradition of nature writing while addressing contemporary issues such as pollinator decline and organic farming practices. Frank Benton is a respected figure in the field of environmental science and an avid beekeeper himself, experiences that enrich the authenticity of his narrative. His passion for nature has been the driving force behind his writings, as he seeks to bridge the gap between science and the layperson's understanding of ecological principles. Benton'Äôs deep-rooted belief in the importance of bee populations in our ecosystem has propelled him to advocate for responsible beekeeping practices through his literature. For anyone interested in the symbiotic relationship between humans and nature, "Bee Keeping" is an essential read. It not only serves as a pragmatic guide for those looking to start their own beekeeping journey but also acts as a call to action for the protection of our vital pollinators. Benton'Äôs work is both informative and deeply inspiring, making it a must-read for environmental enthusiasts and aspiring beekeepers alike.

As scary as the shark in Jaws is, the extinct megalodon had teeth three times the length of those found within the jaws of a great white shark, so a human would only have been a small snack. In fact, the megalodon was capable of swallowing a small car. Known to scientists as Otodus megalodon or Carcharocles megalodon (otodus meaning “tooth shaped like an ear”; carcharocles meaning “well known for jaggedness”; and megalodon meaning “big tooth”), this predator lived approximately 23–3.6 million years ago), from the early Miocene Epoch to the early Pliocene Epoch. The genus name Otodus and the family name Otodontidae are now the most commonly used, but scientific literature remains full of the older designation, and many of the shark experts regard the new family designation as flawed.
For many years, megalodon was thought to be more closely related to the great white shark (Carcharodon carcharias), and though both are still part of the order Lamniformes, the two species now reside in different families: Lamnidae and Otodontidae (megalodon). Either way, while great white sharks can reach sizes of 20 feet long and nearly 2.5 tons in weight, the average megalodon was twice as big, and some of them may have been about three times as big. The sheer size allowed it to target prey as big as whales, and the massive jaw allowed it to simply tear through any kind of body with no regard for the prey’s most vulnerable spots.
While all of that seems to be beyond dispute, almost everything else about the history of the megalodon is up for debate, from its origins to its extinction.  The Megalodon: The History and Legacy of the World’s Largest Prehistoric Predator covers that expansive history in detail, from what is known to what remains most mysterious.

Rooted in neuroscience, psychology and evolutionary biology, this study explores what happens when we stop paying attention and the effect on our behavior.

If we’ve done our job well—and, let’s be honest, if we’re lucky—you’ll read to the end of this description. Most likely, however, you won’t. Somewhere in the middle of the next paragraph, your mind will wander off. Minds wander. That’s just how it is.

That may be bad news for me, but is it bad news for people in general? Does the fact that as much as fifty percent of our waking hours find us failing to focus on the task at hand represent a problem? Michael Corballis doesn’t think so. With The Wandering Mind, he shows us why, rehabilitating woolgathering and revealing its incredibly useful effects. Drawing on the latest research from cognitive science and evolutionary biology, Corballis shows us how mind-wandering not only frees us from moment-to-moment drudgery, but also from the limitations of our immediate selves. Mind-wandering strengthens our imagination, fueling the flights of invention, storytelling, and empathy that underlie our shared humanity; furthermore, he explains, our tendency to wander back and forth through the timeline of our lives is fundamental to our very sense of ourselves as coherent, continuing personalities.

Full of unusual examples and surprising discoveries, The Wandering Mind mounts a vigorous defense of inattention—even as it never fails to hold the reader’s.

    Praise for The Wandering Mind

“[A] conversational, sincere and amusing book about the tendency of our minds to stray from whatever it is we are actually supposed to be focusing on. . . . [An] engaging exploration of the subject.” —Times Higher Education, Book of the Week

“Michael Corballis, the scientist, takes you by the hand and weaves through an avalanche of information from psychology, literature, history, and more to elucidate my favorite mental state—mind wandering. His high capacity for erudition, lucidity, and warmth have never shined more brightly.” —Michael S. Gazzaniga

“The Wandering Mind is a pleasure to read—a lively book that will appeal to a broad spectrum of readers.” —Thomas Suddendorf, author of The Gap
