Sinopse

The Magister Udal sat in the room of his inn in Paris, where customarily the King of France lodged such envoys as came at his expense. He had been sent there to Latinise the letters that passed between Sir Thomas Wyatt and the King's Ministers of France, for he was esteemed the most learned man in these islands. He had groaned much at being sent there, for he must leave in England so many loves—the great, blonde Margot Poins, that was maid to Katharine Howard; the tall, swaying Katharine Howard herself; Judge Cantre's wife that had fed him well; and two other women, with all of whom he had succeeded easily or succeeded in no wise at all.

From the Hugo Award–winning author, the classic millennia-spanning epic in one volume: “A wholly new concept of the far future.” —The New York Times   Originally published in four volumes, Cities in Flight brings together the famed “Okie novels” of science fiction master James Blish. Named after the migrant workers of America’s Dust Bowl, these novels convey Blish’s “history of the future,” a brilliant and bleak look at a world where cities roam the Galaxy looking for work and a sustainable way of life.   In the first novel, They Shall Have Stars, humankind has thoroughly explored the solar system, yet the dream of going even farther seems to have died in all but one man. His battle to realize his dream results in two momentous discoveries: anti-gravity and the secret of immortality. In A Life for the Stars, it is centuries later and antigravity generations have enabled whole cities to lift off the surface of the earth to become galactic wanderers. In Earthman, Come Home, the nomadic cities revert to barbarism and marauding rogue cities begin to pose a threat to all civilized worlds. In the final novel, The Triumph of Time, history repeats itself as the cities once again journey back into space, making a terrifying discovery which could destroy the entire universe. A serious and haunting vision of our world and its limits, Cities in Flight marks a milestone in science fiction.   “Compelling . . . If you haven’t read this yet, I envy you. Blish’s cities will fly through your dreams.” —Stephen Baxter   “In a century that brimmed with human short-sightedness, James Blish was one of the very first genuine visionaries of a new millennium.” —David Brin

Andrey has finally obtained the first of the five swords he needs to complete the Goddess of Fate's quest. Now his path is taking him to the subterranean city of the Gremlins, Arkem. Gremlins are unpleasant, rascally creatures, with a twisted system of logic and a penchant for limitless chaos. So trying to negotiate with them is always fraught with danger. Fortunately, they happen to worship the mechanisms of the Ancients, which are somehow, mysteriously, connected to Andrey's hidden "Slider" class. This means that Andrey has a chance of recovering the second sword after all. Everything gets complicated, however, when a breach to the Inferno opens in Arkem, through which comes an invasion force headed by none other than Lamia, the Succubus who dreams of shredding Falk into tiny little ribbons. And the real world is full of problems, too—mysterious people keep trying to kidnap Andrey, and he's forced to use his newfound abilities to protect himself. As if that weren't enough, the game menu is now popping up in real life, which is making him question his own sanity. But the main question is: are there other people who've acquired powers from the game like he has? And what will it all lead to in the end?

Rat Race by George O. Smith - The idea was to build an electronic gadget; that it turned out to be a rat trap was purely accidental. And that it turned out to have the highly undesirable effects it had...
"You're nuts," came the reply, but the voice on the telephone was jovially reproving rather than sarcastic. "I can't do anything about this order."
Peter Manton blinked. "But it has a Four-A-One priority."
Brannon nodded—invisibly, of course—and said, "Sure you have a top priority. Anything your lab wants has top. But darn it, Peter, the best priority in the world isn't going to buy you a dozen mousetraps that are nonexistent."
    "But—"
"Besides which, that building you're in is about as rat-proof as a sealed gasoline can. There isn't an item of comestible in the place."
"I know that. And the mice can go hungry for all I care. But the mice don't seem to understand that bringing food into the place is not only forbidden by law but dangerous."
"But there ain't a mousetrap in the country. Ding bust it, Peter, mousetraps take spring wire, and labor. The people who used to make mousetraps are now making bombsights and tanks. Besides, Peter, over at that laboratory of yours there should be enough brains and gear to really build the Better Mousetrap. If you can spot a plane at fifty miles, split atoms, and fire radio equipment out of a cannon, you ought to be able to dispose of a mouse or two."
Peter grinned. "You mean spot 'em with radar, and then shoot 'em down in flames with proximity fuses loaded with plutonium war heads? That might be a little strenuous, don't you think? Like cutting the throat to stop the spread of impetigo."

A group of men gather in New Orleans to distribute the estate of the missing Randolph Carter. One of them claims that Carter is alive and begins to weave an incredible tale of his adventures.E. Hoffman Price, during Lovecraft's visit to his home in New Orleans in June 1931, tried to persuade the Providence writer to create a continuation of Randolph Carter's adventures after the character disappears in the story "The Silver Key." HPL refused to be persuaded, so Price himself, without permission, created a text titled "The Lord of Illusion" in August. He sent the result to Lovecraft, hoping that he would agree to edit the work.HPL struggled for a long time with the editing of the text. Although he radically changed the linguistic layer of the work, he made no major changes to the plot. Indeed, it is evident that the ideas are not his own: a lot of action, poorly thought-out concepts, and little suggestiveness.
