Summary

Fourteen stories that follow a young boy coming of age in a dysfunctional family in the rural South Meet William Stroop, a young son of the South whose charming voice and mordant observations of family and culture make him one of American literature’s most memorable narrators. In these fourteen interwoven stories, William details the high (and low) points of his family history, focusing particularly on his lazy, scheming father, Morris, his put-upon mother, Martha, and his confidante, Handsome Brown, a young black farmhand. As Morris matches wits with strangers and neighbors alike in constant pursuit of get-rich-quick plans, Martha tries to hold the family together without the aid of any discernable income. Told with the polish and moral resonance of fables, Georgia Boy captures the beauty and tragedy of life in the rural South during the twentieth century. This ebook features an illustrated biography of Erskine Caldwell including rare photos and never-before-seen documents courtesy of the Dartmouth College Library.

From being a resident physician during the COVID-19 pandemic to living passionately in travel, romance, and heartache, Rodolfo Villarreal-Calderon is a literary chef to an audience who did not realize their hunger—until served his Word Meal. It is a two-part course: first, 99 poems, and second, an 82-page short story (novella).
The poetry is organized around the three abstractions that connect us all—Love, Time, and Death. Love of lovers, of dogs, and of self; the Death of body, our past, and who we once were; the Time within which this all transpires—the Time of your life. You are invited to explore each abstraction and their combinations. Buffet style.
In the drama that is a healthcare encounter, the patient is—and always will be—the protagonist. Get Well Soon! is a novella revolving around a patient admitted to the hospital. The patient narrator reflects on the experiences of being well and ill, as well as the subtle and comical workings of an academic hospital team and hospital stay.

This collection from the World Fantasy award-winning author of The Onion Girl  contains “lucid transfiguration of folklore and myth into fantasy tales.” —Booklist Charles de Lint's urban fantasies, including Moonheart, Forests of the Heart, and The Onion Girl, have earned him a devoted following and critical acclaim as a master of contemporary magical realism. At the heart of his work is the ongoing Newford series, of which this is the latest volume. The city of Newford could be any contemporary North American city . . . except that magic lurks in its music, in its art, in the shadows of its grittiest streets, where mythic beings walk disguised. And its people are like you and me, each looking for a bit of magic to shape their lives and transform their fate. In this volume we meet a bluesman hiding from the devil; a Buffalo Man at the edge of death; a murderous ghost looking for revenge; a wolf man on his first blind date; and many more. We're reunited with Jilly, Geordie, Sophie, the Crow Girls, and other characters whose lives have become part of the great Newford myth. And De Lint takes us beyond Newford's streets to the pastoral hills north of the city, where magic and music have a flavor different but powerful still.   “Gracefully told and filled with unforgettable and convincing characters.” —Library Journal
