Summary

In "Waterloo: A Sequel to The Conscript of 1813," Erckmann-Chatrian deliver a poignant exploration of the human condition against the backdrop of the Napoleonic Wars. This historical novel masterfully intertwines personal narratives with significant historical events, providing a vivid portrayal of the 1815 Battle of Waterloo. The authors utilize a rich, descriptive literary style that immerses readers in the chaos of battle while simultaneously delving into the psychological states of their characters, showcasing the interplay between heroism and futility. Their nuanced approach presents a multilayered examination of loyalty and sacrifice, shedding light on the deeply personal costs of war. The collaboration between Émile Erckmann and Alexandre Chatrian was driven by their shared passion for history and literature, both men being products of the turbulent period of the 19th century in France. Their works often reflect their interest in the social implications of war, informed by their own experiences and the tumultuous backdrop of post-Napoleonic Europe. This sequel not only builds upon the narrative of its predecessor but also serves to amplify their collective voice, exploring themes of morality and destiny shaped by the chaos of conflict. Readers seeking an evocative blend of historical insight and character-driven storytelling will find "Waterloo" both compelling and enlightening. It stands as a significant contribution to the literature of war, offering timeless reflections on bravery, loss, and the haunting remnants of individual choices. From the author of A Separate Little War, a detailed history of the British World War II aircraft and their brave crew. In 1940, the defense of Great Britain rested with a handful of volunteer aircrew, Churchill’s “few.” Overshadowed in later folklore by the more famous Spitfire and Hurricane pilots, there were other pilots, observers and air gunners—just as courageous—flying the Bristol Blenheim MKIV-F. The future of the country and arguably that of the free world depended also on their skill, morale, and sacrifice. Remarkably little has been chronicled of these men and their aircraft—the “Trade Protection” squadrons formed by Hugh Dowding—allotted to 11 Group in October, 1939. The aircraft’s range and endurance made it suitable for defense of coastal shipping against attack on the southern and eastern shores of Britain, and for operations further afield. Indeed, during bitter fighting casualties among Numbers 235, 236, 248, and 254 Squadron Blenheims were high on operations over Norway, Holland, France, Dunkirk, and then the Battle of Britain where the Blenheims were completely outclassed by Messerschmitt 109 and 110 fighters, and fell easy victims, scythed from the sky. But the record of the aircraft and their crew was an immensely proud one. Drawing on contemporary diaries, periodicals, letters, logbooks, memoirs, and interviews with survivors, lauded historian Andy Bird reassesses the vital role they played and repositions it in history. In doing so, he justifiably embraces the heroes we have left behind.

“Sapiens” is a broad and thought-provoking analysis of human history, from its origins to its possible future. Harari argues that humanity has been shaped by a series of key revolutions: the Cognitive Revolution, the Agricultural Revolution, the Scientific Revolution, and the Industrial Revolution. Through these transformations, humans have managed to develop complex civilizations, overcome biological barriers, and alter the course of nature—though at a significant cost to other species and to themselves.
Harari explains that the success of scientific knowledge was due to its alliance with capitalism and imperialism. The exploration of the world was financed by states and merchants seeking wealth and new territories. The European conquest of America, for example, was driven not only by military technology but also by the desire to gain new sources of income and expand markets.
The greatest challenge we face is not technological but philosophical: What do we want to become? Will we continue to pursue growth without considering its human and ecological costs? Or will we find ways to redefine the meaning of success and happiness? Harari leaves us with one certainty: the future is unwritten, but its course will depend on our ability to question the stories we tell ourselves.
The book invites reflection on the role of humans in history and the kind of future we want to build.

“From ghost dogs to phantom orbs, from dead spirits visiting and avenging wraiths, there is plenty . . . to keep skeptic and believer both enthralled.” —Thomas Freese, coauthor of Haunted Battlefields of the South

With its tales of benevolent and malicious specters, terrifying monsters, and unexplained phenomena, Halloween is the holiday most people associate with spooky stories. But do spirits remain hidden the rest of the year? In the rich storytelling customs of the commonwealth, the supernatural world is also connected with holidays such as Thanksgiving, Christmas, Valentine’s Day, and Memorial Day.

In Haunted Holidays, celebrated storytellers Roberta Simpson Brown and Lonnie E. Brown have assembled a hair-raising collection of paranormal tales for readers of all ages. The stories present many new and spooky characters, including the deceased great aunt who still rocks in her favorite chair on Mother’s Day, the young boy who made good on his promise to return a silver dollar on the Fourth of July, and even the ghost who hated Labor Day. In addition to tales of haunting, the Browns reveal many Appalachian legends and their importance to the storytelling tradition, such as the phantom bells who guide the dead to the other side, and a “chime child” born when the clock strikes midnight on Christmas Day, who is rumored to be blessed with the gift of second sight.

More than a collection of ghost stories or family legends, Haunted Holidays takes readers on a fireside journey that preserves and promotes oral traditions, revealing the importance of sharing beliefs, traditions, and values with a new generation of listeners.

Even after the legendary evacuation from Dunkirk in June 1940 there were still large British formations fighting the Germans alongside their French allies. After mounting a vigorous counterattack at Abbeville and then engaging a tough defence along the Somme, the British were forced to conduct a second evacuation from the ports of Le Havre, Cherbourg, Brest, and St Nazaire. While France was in its death throes, politicians and soldiers debated what to do—flee to England or North Africa, to seek an armistice.

Case Red captures the drama of the final three weeks of military operations in France in June 1940, and explains the great impact it had on the course of relations between Britain and France during the remainder of the war. It also addresses the military, political, and human drama of France's collapse in June 1940, and how the windfall of captured military equipment, fuel, and industrial resources enhanced the Third Reich's ability to attack its next foe—the Soviet Union.

Welcome to Photography and Lynching in America: Without Sanctuary. In this powerful exploration, we confront the painful and often overlooked history of racial violence in the United States, particularly focusing on the practice of lynching in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This audiobook examines not just the brutality of these acts, but the ways in which they were immortalized through photography, turning horrific moments of racial terrorism into public spectacles.
Through the lens of these photographs, we see the complicity of ordinary white citizens and community leaders who participated in, or stood by, as these brutal acts unfolded. We’ll also delve into the disturbing justifications used to defend lynching, such as the perpetuation of white supremacy and false narratives surrounding black criminality. But this history is not just about the past—it’s about how these acts continue to shape the racial landscape of America today.
As we journey through this dark chapter of American history, we’ll explore the resilience of black communities, the fight for justice, and the lasting impact of these events. This audiobook seeks to not only remember these atrocities but to understand how they continue to influence the ongoing struggle against racism in America. Stay with us as we peel back the layers of this history and face its painful truths, in the hope of building a more just and equal future.
