Sinopsis

In "My Own Story," Emmeline Pankhurst provides a vivid and personal account of her life and the origins of the women's suffrage movement in Britain. Written in an accessible and engaging style, the narrative not only chronicles her activism and relentless pursuit of justice for women but also reflects the broader socio-political context of early 20th-century England. Pankhurst's candid storytelling, interlaced with impassioned rhetoric, offers insight into the struggles, sacrifices, and triumphs faced by suffragettes, thus making it a significant historical document and a foundational text in feminist literature. Emmeline Pankhurst, a formidable leader and strategist in the women's suffrage movement, was influenced by both her political family background and the prevailing social injustices of her time. Her experiences, including imprisonment and activism alongside her daughters, shaped her commitment to radical approaches in seeking equality. Pankhurst's unique perspective as a woman who defied societal norms allows her to speak with authenticity and urgency, making her story resonate with a broad audience. "My Own Story" is essential reading for anyone interested in gender studies, political history, or the evolution of modern feminist movements. Pankhurst's compelling narrative is not just a personal memoir; it serves as an inspiration for contemporary activism, urging readers to confront injustice and fight for their rights.

He burst on the fusty corridors of Victorian spirituality like a breath of fresh air, regaling one prime minister with his sense of humor and touching the lives of seven presidents.Who was this man? A visionary educator and fundraiser, D. L. Moody was also a renowned evangelist in the nineteenth century. Long before radio and television, he brought the transformative message of the gospel before 100 million people on both sides of the Atlantic. Thousands of underprivileged young people were educated in the schools he established, and before the Civil War, he went to a place no one else would: the slums of Chicago called, "Little Hell." The mission he started in an abandoned saloon drew children by the hundreds and prompted a visit from President-elect, Abraham Lincoln, in 1860.Drawing on the best, most recent scholarship, D. L. Moody—A Life chronicles the incredible journey of one of the great souls of history.

"Elegant and enlightening." —Dominic Green, Wall Street Journal

Phocion (402–318 BCE) won Athens's highest public office by direct democratic election an unmatched forty-five times and was officially honored as a "Useful Citizen." A student at Plato's Academy, Phocion gained influence and power during a time when Athens faced multiple crises stemming from Macedonia's emergence as an international power under Philip II and his son Alexander the Great. Following Athens's defeat by Macedonia, Phocion unsuccessfully sought mild terms of surrender. Oligarchy was imposed on democratic Athens, and more than twelve thousand "undesirable" Athenians were exiled. When the oligarchic regime was overthrown and the exiles returned, dispossessed Athenians took out their volcanic anger on Phocion, who throughout his career had often been a harsh critic of the citizens' political decisions. His inflammatory rhetoric contributed to the popular conclusion that he lacked a genuine sense of belonging to the community he wished so desperately to preserve. When he was eighty-four, the Athenians convicted him of treason and condemned him to die by hemlock. In this fresh biography, Thomas R. Martin explores how and why Phocion ultimately failed as a citizen and as a leader. His story offers unsettling lessons for citizens in democracies today.

When Mark Greenside—a native New Yorker living in California, political lefty, writer, and lifelong skeptic—is dragged by his girlfriend to a tiny Celtic village in Brittany at the westernmost edge of France in Finistère, or what he describes as "the end of the world," his life begins to change.

In a playful, headlong style, and with enormous affection for the Bretons, Greenside shares how he makes a life for himself in a country where he doesn't speak the language or understand the culture. He gradually places his trust in the villagers he encounters—neighbors, workers, acquaintances—and he's consistently won over and surprised as he manages to survive day-to-day trials.

Until he came to this town, Greenside was lost, moving through life without a plan, already in his 40s with little money and no house. So when he settles into the rhythm of this new French culture not only does he find a home and meaningful relationships in this French countryside, he finds himself.

I'll Never Be French (no matter what I do) is both a new beginning and a homecoming for Greenside. He has never regretted his journey and, as he advises to those searching for their next adventure, neither will you.
