Summary

From an insider, the forty-year saga of the rise and fall of Digital Equipment Corporation, one of the pioneering companies of the computer age.   Digital Equipment Corporation created the minicomputer, networking, the concept of distributed computing, speech recognition, and other major innovations. It was the number-two computer maker behind IBM. Yet it ultimately failed as a business and was sold to Compaq Corporation. What happened? Edgar Schein consulted to DEC throughout its history and so had unparalleled access to all the major players, and an inside view of all the major events. He shows how the unique organizational culture established by DEC's founder, Ken Olsen, gave the company important competitive advantages in its early years, but later became a hindrance and ultimately led to its downfall. Coauthors Schein, Kampas, DeLisi, and Sonduck explain in detail how a particular culture can become so embedded that an organization is unable to adapt to changing circumstances even though it sees the need very clearly. The essential elements of DEC’s culture are still visible in many other organizations today, and most former employees are so positive about their days at DEC that they attempt to reproduce its culture in their current work situations. In the era of post-dotcom meltdown, raging debate about companies “built to last” vs. “built to sell,” and more entrepreneurial startups than ever, the rise and fall of DEC is the ultimate case study.

Despite shifts in our national conversations and perspectives on mental health, stigma still abounds – and showing vulnerability feels risky if you work in the health and social sectors. There’s social pressure to stay the course and a sense of normalised misery in many workplaces. The ultimate irony of our compassionate practice is that we often fail to give the same compassion to ourselves.
Creating meaningful and enduring social impact requires deep and rich expertise, a growth mindset and a whole lot of stamina. Simply put, burning out should not be an option we even contemplate as acceptable in our health and social sector workforce. It’s time to reject busy and stress as a badge of honour and a rite of passage. We need to value ourselves and our wellbeing first and foremost if we want to have any chance of sustaining our capacity to make a meaningful difference through our work. Yes, that means you too. First.
This The Health Hazard draws on Alison Coughlan’s experience as an accomplished consultant and leader who took her own long, slow descent into burnout. From finding herself face down and wondering whether she would ever be okay again, Alison stepped forward one tiny step at a time and rebuilt herself and her life. In this audiobook, Alison shares the lessons she learnt along the way and guides you through a series of steps to create insight, shift your mindset and build the energy reserves you so dearly need.
Optimise the difference that you make in the lives of others, but not at the expense of your own energy and wellbeing. Sustain yourself and become part of the change that we so desperately need in our health and social sectors. You matter too.

"How Will Your Kids Reach Financial Independence?"
That's the question Doug Nordman and his spouse heard at so many personal-finance meetups and conferences. They finally asked their daughter, Carol Pittner: "What do you remember about us teaching you to manage your money?"
Carol lit up with her stories, and now they're sharing them with your family.
Pittner and Nordman show you how to motivate your kids to manage their money. They'll make lots of mistakes. When you start teaching them at a young age, though, their mistakes are a lot smaller (and cheaper) than years later when they're in the workforce. Raising Your Money-Savvy Family For Next-Generation Financial Independence will help you learn to validate their feelings about money, talk through their mistakes, and think of better ways to manage their money the next time. Later you'll help them find their own motivations to earn, save, and invest.
This is not just another parenting manual or child-development textbook. Doug Nordman and Carol Pittner share their stories in a back-and-forth narrative that helps you see how your kids might perceive your parenting. They show you what worked for them (and what didn't) and they'll give you actionable ideas to try with your family.

    The Responsible Company - What...

Patagonia, named by Fortune in 2007 as the coolest company on the planet, has earned a reputation as much for its ground-breaking environmental and social practices as for the quality of its clothes. In this exceptionally frank account, Chouinard and Stanley recount how the company and its culture gained the confidence, by step and misstep, to make its work progressively more responsible, and to ultimately share its discoveries with companies as large as Wal-Mart or as small as the corner bakery.

In plain, compelling prose, the authors describe the current impact of manufacturing and commerce on the planet's natural systems and human communities, and how that impact now forces business to change its ways. The Responsible Company shows companies how to reduce the harm they cause, improve the quality of their business, and provide the kind of meaningful work everyone seeks. It concludes with specific, practical steps every business can undertake, as well as advice on what to do, in what order.

The advice in this book is simple but powerful: reduce your environmental footprint, make legitimate products that last, reclaim deep knowledge of your business and its supply chain to make the most of opportunities in the years to come, and earn the trust you'll need by treating your workers, customers and communities with respect.
