This collection showcases the evolution of adventure literature, with works ranging from gothic to romantic, and realism to pulp fiction, thereby capturing the swashbuckling zest and perilous escapades synonymous with pirate lore. While each story stands alone in its portrayal of buoyant heroes and villains, the anthology is skillfully tied together by a common thread of thrill and the unyielding human spirit against all odds, making it an indispensable resource in the study of genre diversity. The authors and editors, each formidable in their own right, hail from the 18th to early 20th centuries, a period rich with literary innovation. Distinguished scholars and avid readers alike will find 'The Jolly Roger Boxed-Set' not only a thrilling voyage into the tumultuous waters of pirate narrations but also a lens through which to explore diverse literary methodologies and philosophical undertones. This anthology promises an enriching experience, as it not only entertains but educates, ensuring a deeper appreciation of how adventure literature has shaped and been shaped by history. Six has always been a number we group things around – Six of the best, six of one half a dozen of another, six feet under, six pack, six degrees of separation and a sixth sense are but a few of the ways we use this number.

Such is its popularity that we thought it is also a very good way of challenging and investigating an author’s work to give width, brevity, humour and depth across six of their very best.

In this series we gather together authors whose short stories both rivet the attention and inspire the imagination to visit their gems in a series of six, to roam across an author’s legacy in a few short hours and gain a greater understanding of their writing and, of course, to be lavishly entertained by their ideas, their narrative and their way with words.

These stories can be surprising and sometimes at a tangent to what we expected, but each is fully formed and a marvellous adventure into the world and words of a literary master.

Of Withered Apples by Philip K. Dick is a hauntingly symbolic short story that blends dreamlike imagery with unsettling undercurrents of fate and desire. In this surreal tale, Dick draws readers into a world where ordinary objects—such as withered apples hanging on a tree—take on an ominous significance, suggesting temptation, decay, and the fragility of human will. Known for his explorations of altered reality and psychological tension, Dick uses this story to probe the boundaries between the real and the illusory, leaving readers questioning what lies beneath the surface of everyday life. Perfect for fans of speculative fiction, existential allegories, and classic mid-20th century science fiction.

Victor Marie Hugo was born on 26th February 1802 in Besançon, France.
There can be no doubt that Hugo is ranked as the greatest of French authors and poets. In addition to this he fought against social injustice throughout his life and from his frequent elections to the French Assembly.
Hugo published his first novel, Han d’Islande (1823), the year after his marriage and so began an immense canon of fiction and poetry not only for France but to World literature.
He was elected to the Académie Française in 1841 and the same year came a peerage and entrance to the Higher Chamber as a pair de France, where he spoke against the death penalty, social injustice and in favour of press freedom.
In the years leading up to the Revolution of 1848 Hugo began to lean towards Republicanism and greater freedoms. With the formation of the Second Republic, he was again elected to the Assembly.
When Napoleon III seized power in 1851, and established an anti-parliamentary constitution, Hugo openly declared him a traitor to France. This, of course, meant exile where he remained until 1870. In exile he published his greatest work ‘Les Misérables’, and further widely honoured collections of poetry.
Returning home he was again elected to the National Assembly and the Senate. It was the time of the Franco-Prussian war and with Paris under siege and food ever more scarce, he wrote in his diary that he was now "eating the unknown".
Later he was instrumental in strengthening the rights of artists and copyright, steps which led to the international protections of the Berne Convention.
Victor Hugo died on 22nd May 1885, aged 83.
