Originally written by Irish playwright Hamilton Deane, this stage play was the first authorized adaptation of the 1897 epistolary novel Dracula. Beginning a tour in England in 1924, it was then revised by American writer John L. Balderstone for a Broadway production that opened in October, 1927, featuring Hungarian-American actor Bela Lugosi in his first English-language role. Balderstone's revision would become the basis of the 1931 film adaptation, also starring Lugosi. The play was revived in 1977, receiving the Tony Award for Best Revival and leading to the 1979 film, both starring Frank Langella.
