Summary

In "The Children's Tabernacle; Or, Hand-Work and Heart-Work," A. L. O. E. presents a vibrant exploration of the significance of both practical craftsmanship and the moral cultivation of young minds. Blending engaging narratives with hands-on activities, the book encourages children to develop their creativity while emphasizing the importance of ethical values and spirituality. Written in a lucid, accessible style characteristic of Victorian literature, A. L. O. E. intertwines educational themes with storytelling, allowing young readers to experience both tangible skill-building and introspective growth in a faith-based context. A. L. O. E., the pen name of the prolific author Charlotte Mary Yonge, was deeply influenced by her background in a family that valued education, faith, and social reform. Her endeavors in literature often aimed to impart moral lessons while celebrating the joys of childhood. This personal mission undoubtedly plays a crucial role in the creation of "The Children's Tabernacle," as it serves as a guide to help children navigate the intersection of their creative instincts and spiritual growth during a time of rapid social change. This essential work is highly recommended for parents and educators seeking to inspire children in both artistic endeavors and moral development. "The Children's Tabernacle" is not merely a book but a transformative experience that encourages the next generation to embrace the dual importance of hand-work and heart-work in their lives.

Atmaarpana Stuthi or Unmattha Panchaa Shath.
The Atmaarpana Stuthi is a hymn in Sanskrit language composed by Appayya Dikshitar, one of the great saints and proponent of Advaita Philosophy after Adi Sankara. It is a hymn in praise of Lord Shiva and is also known as ‘Unmattha Panchaa Shath’.
Once Dikshitar felt that he has to put himself to a test as to whether his devotion to Lord Shiva was indeed true. He thought, ‘Suppose I become insane, will my mouth utter the name of Lord Shiva. If that be so, then it must be real.’ So, he embarked on an experiment. He made a paste of Datura seeds. These seeds are poisonous and if taken in, will make a person insane. He also prepared an antidote to this poison.
He called his disciples. He gave them the poisonous paste and the antidote. He told them to give him the first potion for a week and write down whatever he said in that state of mind. After recording this, they have to give after a week, the antidote that would bring him back to normalcy. Indeed it was a remarkable experiment to find out how serious he was about Shiva.
The experiment started. The disciples recorded what he said during that time. It was this hymn on Lord Shiva consisting of fifty verses. ‘Panchaa Shath’ means 50 and ‘Unmattha’ means “one who has lost his mind”. So, it is 50 verses composed during the period when he lost his mind.

”Let no one make you think that you are too young to serve God. That is not true. As soon as you know right from wrong, you are old enough to begin taking the right way. As soon as you are old enough to be punished for doing wrong, you are old enough to give your heart to God, and to follow Christ.” So Rev. Ryle speaks to children of all ages. He does not speak down to children, for even the littlest ones can understand great spiritual truths. Instead, he teaches them in simple language what it means to be a true follower of Jesus and challenges them to live a better life whatever their age by following Jesus’ example – messages we adults could profit from as well.
