Summary

England, 1685. In the wake of King Charles II’s death, the crown passes to his Catholic brother, James, despite Protestant unrest. Hal Bartholomew, envoy with ties to both court and country, is dispatched to Holland to dissuade the exiled Duke of Monmouth - Charles’s illegitimate son - from rebellion.

But Monmouth’s plans are already in motion. Wounded and on the run after the disastrous battle at Sedgemoor, Hal finds an unlikely sanctuary with Penny Rossi: the childhood friend who has always loved him. For Hal, a man who never believed in love, Penny’s devotion begins to reveal what he never thought he needed.

Their escape to Florence offers a fragile peace, but dangers from the past cast a long shadow. As letters from home carry grim news and long-buried secrets resurface, Hal and Penny must face the cost of loyalty.

A sweeping tale of rebellion, redemption and love, SON OF THE MORNING is the fourth book in Dodie Bishop's Silence And Shadows series of historical novels.

To many, Shannon’s was the quintessential Irish pub—a brawl or two wasn’t out of the question, especially when interlopers decided to take matters into their own hands. The place where fishermen chose to meet, the fragrance of gutted fish was first to greet those brave enough to open the door. Most important?
    Tourists weren’t particularly welcomed.
Keegan checked his watch, questioning whether he made the right decision—tipping a pint with someone he didn’t know wasn’t his thing, causing him to question ulterior motives. And, when he thought about it, there really wasn’t any reason for Smokey to set up a meeting. So, the question became . . .
What did he have to gain?
Fresh from his latest Washington D.C. case, Detective Decklin Kilgarry knows he needs a change—a different time. A different place. Deciding to visit family in Cobh, Ireland, he places his career on hold—until murders begin to stack up and the livelihood of the village is threatened. Convinced his expertise can bring the killer to justice, there are those less than thrilled when he joins the case, prompting him to go undercover into the seamy side of Irish life.

Under a light rain, Mike Mansfield stands stoically beneath a large elm tree, waiting patiently for the person he has been searching for. Burly and in his mid-fifties, Mansfield was what some might call chaotically good—a person with an unshakable sense of right and wrong, and a very unique brand of justice.

However, what Mansfield doesn’t know is that after years of working in the shadows, someone has now found him. And they have been watching Mansfield for sometime.

That person is David Bruni. A man with both the money and opportunity to do something truly astonishing with modern technology. He too has been working in secret … to build a supercomputer capable of ‘stitching’ together the billions of pictures taken every day to create snapshots of the world at any given time.

The capability proves to be extraordinary, and one that has coincidentally revealed to Bruni the secret behind Mike Mansfield’s enigmatic success at finding people no one else can. A well-kept secret not even Bruni would have expected.

Yet it’s not until a third critical piece appears, a young INTERPOL agent named Leslie Salazar, that Bruni’s true reason for creating his incredible system finally becomes clear.

For years no one had any idea what Bruni was up to … and that was exactly the way he wanted it.
