Synopsis

Following his wife’s tragic death, a rich man attempts to contact the god Pan, and his efforts yield spirited results in this classic occult novel.

In her compelling way, Dion Fortune combines romance, suspense, and the search for truth and meaning in this psychological thriller that deals ultimately with the growth of consciousness and the path to self-knowledge.

Wealthy, skeptical Hugh Paston, shocked by the death of his wife with her lover in a car crash, finds himself at a crossroads in his life. In search of a distraction, he wanders into the shop of an antiquarian bookseller who befriends him and sparks his interest in occult literature. Hugh is drawn to study the Eleusinian Mysteries and, determined to evoke Pan, the goat-foot god, he buys Monks Farm, a former monastery, long unused and sinking into ruin. With the aid of Mona Wilton, a young artist, Hugh refurbishes and revitalizes the property in preparation for the rites. In the ancient monastery, he is possessed by the spirit of a fifteenth-century prior, Ambrosius, who had been walled up in the cellar for practicing certain pagan rituals he had discovered in old Greek manuscripts in the monastery library—rituals dedicated to Pan.

Alexander Pushkin's greatest short story. Hermann, a young German officer serving in the Engineers regiment, is obsessed by gambling, although he never indulges in it himself. One night he hears a tale about how a wealthy 87-year-old Countess in St. Petersburg once learned the secret of how to win on three cards from the Duc d'Orleans. He becomes obsessed with learning the secret himself. In pursuit of this aim, he becomes enamoured of the Countess' companion, the beautiful Lizaveta. A nocturnal visit to his paramour, however, turns to tragedy as he finds himself in the chamber of the Countess and tries first by persuasion and then by force to get her to reveal the secret of the cards. The denouement of the story is uncanny and captivating.

Ellen should have known that a gathering in America's last castle would entail a few uninvited guests. During a Christmas eve wedding at the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, North Carolina, Ellen and her friends are visited by multiple ghosts. The spirits have come to tell their stories, to right the wrongs that history has done to their memories. Each of them died in Asheville with their voices stifled. One spirit is particularly adamant and threatening, despite her small size, and her mood fluctuates like the mountain winds surrounding the great estate. She claims to be the ghost of Zelda Fitzgerald, and she wants her story told, even if she has to kill to make it happen. Voted Best Mystery Book of the Year for 2022 at Utopia Con!
