Synopsis

Four successful women share their hardships and their strength: “An object lesson in the power of friendship—and the power of perseverance.” —Arianna Huffington, author of On Becoming Fearless

For over a decade, four women came together for weekly “kitchen table coaching” sessions designed to support each other through life’s ups and downs. They experienced marriage and motherhood, divorce and widowhood. They’d had their hearts broken by a failed adoption or a partner’s infidelity; they’d started companies and lost companies; they’d cared for loved ones through terminal illness; and one of them even experienced being shot and left for dead during the Jonestown massacre—only to go on to a career in the US House of Representatives.

The power and strength of their collective friendship has enabled them to not only survive but thrive, and the remarkable results can be found in this collection of lessons, stories, and wisdom. Part autobiography, part self-help book, This Is Not the Life I Ordered also teaches you how to put together your own gathering of kitchen-table friends, and is filled with useful strategies for:Finding courageManaging misfortuneUnderstanding moneyReinventing yourselfLearning to love your mistakesFacing naysayers and much more

The acclaimed historian presents a “beautifully perceptive and dynamic reassessment of Henry VIII…in this highly engrossing biography” (Booklist, starred review).   Henry VIII is best known for his tempestuous marriages and the fates of his six wives. But his reign and reputation were hugely influenced by his confidants, ministers, and even occasional rivals—many of whom have been underplayed in previous biographies. Exploring these relationships in depth, Tracy Borman offers a fresh perspective on the legendary king, revealing surprising contradictions in his beliefs and behavior. Henry was capable of fierce but seldom abiding loyalty, of raising men up only to destroy them later. He loved to be attended by boisterous young men like his friend Charles Brandon, who shared his passion for sport. But the king could also be diverted by men of intellect, culture, and wit, as his longstanding interplay with Cardinal Wolsey and his reluctant abandonment of Thomas More attest. Eager to escape the shadow of his father, Henry was easily led by male advisors early in his reign. In time, though, he matured into a profoundly paranoid and ruthless king. Recounting the great Tudor’s life and signal moments through the lens of his male relationships, Henry VIII and the Men Who Made Him sheds fresh light on this fascinating figure.

From a bracing new voice comes this life-affirming memoir of a daughter making and remaking her life in her mother's image. Sifting gingerly through memories of her late mother, brilliant newcomer Sarah McColl has penned an indelible tribute to the joy and pain of loving well. Even as her own marriage splinters, McColl drops everything when her mother is diagnosed with cancer, returning to the family farmhouse and laboring over elaborate meals in the hopes of nourishing her back to health. In a series of vibrant vignettes?lipstick applied, novels read, imperfect cakes baked?McColl reveals a woman of endless charm and infinite love for her unruly brood of children. Mining the dual losses of both her young marriage and her beloved mother, McColl confronts her identity as a woman, walking lightly in the footsteps of the woman who came before her and clinging fast to the joy she left behind. With candor reminiscent of classics like C. S. Lewis's A Grief Observed, Joy Enough offers a story that blooms with life.

A century of valor among one of the finest infantry divisions ever to serve, vividly chronicled through extensive research and interviews with veterans.   From the Great War to the War on Terror, the US 4th Infantry Division has always been there. To War with the 4th recounts a hundred years of combat, beginning with their first battle on September 14th, 1918. The men of the “Ivy” Division faced German artillery, fell in the hundreds, yet won the day.   On D-Day of World War II, the 4th Division landed at Utah Beach and kept fighting across Europe until Germany surrendered. From Normandy to the Battle of the Bulge, no other American division suffered more casualties in the European theater, and no other division accomplished as much. In Vietnam, they executed dangerous “search and destroy” missions and fought major engagements, including thirty-three consecutive days of close-quarters combat during the Battle of Dak To. In May 2009, they fought in Iraq at the height of Operation Enduring Freedom. The 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team deployed to Afghanistan for a year-long combat mission  in the birthplace of the Taliban.   Through firsthand interviews with veterans across the decades, and the expert analysis of the authors, the role of one of America’s mainstay divisions is illuminated in these pages.
