Summary

The NHB Drama Classics series presents the world's greatest plays in affordable, highly readable editions for students, actors and theatregoers. The hallmarks of the series are accessible introductions (focussing on the play's theatrical and historical background, together with an author biography, key dates and suggestions for further reading) and the complete text, uncluttered with footnotes. The translations, by leading experts in the field, are accurate and above all actable. The editions of English-language plays include a glossary of unusual words and phrases to aid understanding. Lawrence's second play, written in 1910 but unpublished until 1914, is an intense and powerful drama in the naturalist tradition, set in a Nottinghamshire mining town. This edition includes an introduction by Colin Counsell, a glossary of difficult words, a chronology and suggestions for further reading.

Ukraine 1929. As Stalin launches the first of his Five-Year Plans, a closeknit rural community stands unwittingly in the path of his drive to create a thriving socialist Soviet Union. The outcome is catastrophic.
What begins for the people of the village as an amusingly alien concept rapidly becomes an unstoppable force for change. Robbed first of their land, then their religion and independence, the whole country soon becomes engulfed by a tragedy that will scar a nation for generations.
Natal'ia Vorozhbit's play The Grain Store was first staged in this English translation by Nina Raine by the Royal Shakespeare Company at the Courtyard Theatre, Stratford-upon-Avon, in 2009.
'A grim subject, but this extraordinary play by Natal'ya Vorozhbit tackles it, in Sasha Dugdale's translation, with passion, intelligence and cunning' - Guardian
'A disturbing vision of socialist dogma degenerating into corrosive megalomania' - Evening Standard

A LibriVox Weekly Poetry tribute to William Shakespeare marking the 400th anniversary of the Bard's death in April 2016. Two of Shakespeare's most famous sonnets, Sonnet 18 and Sonnet 130, have completely contradict each-other and offer differing views on love and love poetry. Whereas Sonnet 18 is the nice cute cliched one, Sonnet 130 provides a more realistic, almost rhetorical view of love and both would be incredibly popular. This project features Sonnet 18. - Summary by catrose

It's 1955 and the Pallas Players, an all-female theatre company, are putting on a play: Whisky Galore.
They transport us back to 1943 on the Scottish islands of Great and Little Todday, where the whisky supply has dried up because of the war, leaving tensions running high. Relief seems to be at hand when a ship carrying 50,000 bottles of whisky is wrecked just offshore. Then it's every thirsty man for himself as the islanders try to rescue as many bottles as possible before stuffy Captain Waggett of the Home Guard can put a stop to their fun.
Philip Goulding's stage adaptation of Compton Mackenzie's comedy classic is a tribute to the feisty all-female touring theatre companies of the post-war years. First performed in a touring production by Oldham Coliseum Theatre, Hull Truck Theatre and New Vic Theatre, Whisky Galore combines rollicking physical theatre, panto and farce, with an array of hilarious characters for any female-led theatre company.
'Philip Goulding's adaptation retains the authenticity of Mackenzie's mellifluous prose and wittily divvies up twenty-five characters among a hard-working cast of seven. An enjoyably bright and breezy retelling of a classic comic tale' - The Stage
'Captures the absurdity of Mackenzie's story and retains its joyful sense of mischief' - The Reviews Hub
