Summary

“Reveals their race across the Atlantic in stunning pictures . . . includes a first-hand account from Captain Brown of his world-first flight.” —Daily Mail Online   It was Tuesday, 15 July 1919 and for the residents of Clifden on Ireland’s west coast this was not to be a normal day. Just before 08.40 hours, descending out of the gloom, came a large, twin-engine airplane lining up for final approach. After a flight lasting 16 hours and 28 minutes, Captain John Alcock and Lieutenant Arthur Whitten-Brown had won the race to be the first to fly nonstop across the Atlantic—and the prize of £10,000, roughly equivalent to $1,000,000 in today’s money, offered by Lord Rothermere, aviation philanthropist and owner of the Daily Mail.   Illustrated by many unique photographs this book tells the story of the race, delayed for almost six years by the First World War. Many aircraft would be entered but few would even get off the ground. The teams faced great difficulties in preparing for the challenge of crossing one of the most hostile stretches of ocean on Earth.   The authors not only reveal tales of failures and technical difficulties, but of the intense frustration of waiting for the perfect weather-window. And even when finally airborne, Alcock and Brown’s flight almost ended in disaster on several occasions as weather conditions almost conspired to cast them down into the grey, cold waters of the Atlantic and almost certain death.   “Right from the first page, you’ll be hooked . . . you’re in the cockpit with Alcock and Brown and every dump and dive of the flight across the Atlantic.” —Vintage Airfix

Sammy Davis, Jr. will forever be remembered as one of America's finest entertainers. An all–around performer who could sing, dance, and act, Davis broke racial barriers in the entertainment world and became the only non–white member of the Rat Pack. Only now, however, is Davis's talent as a photographer finally being recognized. In this previously unpublished collection of black and white photography, readers will be fascinated by Davis's portrayals of A–list performers, iconic world leaders, and scenes from everyday life. Davis's subjects include dozens of classic celebrities–such as Frank Sinatra, Marilyn Monroe, Paul Newman, and James Dean–who are often photographed at their most casual and revealing moments.Accompanying the pictures is an assortment of remembrances by Burt Boyar, a longtime friend and traveling companion of Davis who collaborated with the entertainer on both of his autobiographies. Through a series of memorable anecdotes, Boyar reflects on Davis's many achievements as well as the private moments they shared as friends. Along with Davis's candid shots of ordinary life–from a group of children laughing to a baseball game at the Washington Monument–these stories reveal a side of the performer far removed from his Rat Pack persona. The release of this book will also coincide with the release of Burt Boyar's upcoming documentary, Sammy Speaks, created from his extensive archive of taped conversations with the star.

"Angrynomics" embarks on a critical examination of contemporary capitalism, identifying the systemic issues that have led to widespread economic insecurity and the manipulation of public sentiment by political figures. The authors draw from a rich tapestry of academic research, presenting a compelling narrative that weaves together history, psychology, and economic theory to diagnose the causes of societal anger and propose innovative solutions.
Through engaging dialogues and insightful analysis, Lonergan and Blyth articulate the pressing need for a systemic reboot of capitalism. They explore the concept of "good" anger as a force for societal change, contrasted with "bad" anger that stems from irrational and divisive impulses. The book presents a series of proposals aimed at redesigning contemporary capitalism to foster more equality, stability, and less societal anger, highlighting innovative ideas such as sovereign wealth funds and dual interest rates as means to achieve these goals.
If you're looking to understand the global atmosphere of anger, its economic underpinnings, and the potential pathways toward a more equitable and peaceful society, this audiobook summary offers a powerful and accessible overview. "Angrynomics" is an essential listen for news enthusiasts, activists, and anyone interested in the direction our world is taking, providing a roadmap for navigating the challenges of the present while laying the groundwork for a more hopeful future
