Summary

The author of Sunday Morning Quilts gathers some of today’s most popular quilters to take on challenging projects inspired friends and family members.   The idea for your next quilt could come from anywhere—whether it’s a suggestion from your spouse or something you saw out your window. In You Inspire Me to Quilt, Cheryl Arkison demonstrates how you can turn inspiration from your daily life—such as a love of hockey or the joy of a bacon sandwich—into a creative challenge that results in new, beautiful and personally meaningful quilts.    Taking inspiration from their own lives, Arkison and some of her most popular quilt blogger friends share ten complete quilt patterns, plus advice and wisdom on the art of quiltmaking. See how ideas from people, places, and things become original design concepts. Includes compelling designs from Jen Carlton-Bailly, Cynthia Frenette, Carolyn Friedlander, Andrea Harris, Rossie Hutchinson, Heather Jones, Amanda Jean Nyberg, and Blair Stocker

Late summer heading into early autumn/fall is a such beautiful time of the year. You can feel everything growing still and soft; nature is slowing down and people are getting cozy. The most stunning colours can be found outdoors at this time.
Despite the natural beauty and your looking forward to the coziness of winter, you find that a few short months later things have gone awry. You have ploughed headlong into winter without design or plan; you are wearing the same clothes as last year because you have not put thought into your wardrobe; you have put on weight from indiscriminate eating and are complaining in your head, or worse, out loud that ‘it’s cold today’. This was me!
Many warm-blooded creatures hibernate when it is cold out and go with their natural instincts by doing so. They don't enter the spring season stressed; rather, animals waking up from hibernation are coming to sleepily, well rested and ready for the warmer season; so, why don’t we? We wouldn't go to sleep for months on end, but perhaps we can take a leaf out of their book and make winter a mental spa time of rejuvenation, beauty and pleasure.
It is easy to be enthusiastic about the winter season when the leaves are turning. Fall fashions are always fun to look forward to. We can rekindle our love for the colours of plum, navy and camel at this time of year. But a few months later the novelty has already worn off!
Discover strategies for not just surviving, but thriving this winter; on how to have a chic and beautiful winter season and emerge, like a butterfly ready for a gorgeous spring and summer.
If you are ready to change how you feel about the winter season, treat yourself to a copy of ‘How to be Chic in the Winter’!

While it might not appear to be the case, musician Ben Folds concedes he wasn’t entirely comfortable playing the piano in front of an orchestra at first. That’s because growing up in North Carolina, playing percussion in orchestras, he never dreamed he’d be the headliner.
But several successful albums later, including this year’s Ben Folds Presents: University A Cappella, his latest tour includes a series of performances with some of the nation’s leading orchestras.
Folds spoke with Jeffrey Brown at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., at the start of the tour.

A study of an important but neglected director that “fills many gaps and updates our knowledge of a major filmmaker of the silent period and beyond” (Positif).

The profusion of research on film history means that there are now few Hollywood filmmakers in the category of Neglected Master, but John M. Stahl has been stuck in it for far too long. His strong association with melodrama and the “woman’s film” is a key to this neglect; those mainstays of popular cinema are no longer the object of critical scorn or indifference, but Stahl has until now hardly benefited from this welcome change in attitude.

His remarkable silent melodramas were either lost or buried in archives, while his major sound films such as Imitation of Life and Magnificent Obsession, equally successful in their time, have been overshadowed by the glamour of the 1950s remakes by Douglas Sirk. Sirk is a far from neglected figure; Stahl’s much longer Hollywood career deserves attention and celebration in its own right, as this book definitively shows.

Drawing on a wide range of film and document archives, scholars from three continents come together to cover Stahl’s work, as director and also producer, from its beginnings during World War I to his death, as a still active filmmaker, in 1950. Between them they make a strong case for Stahl as an important figure in cinema history, and as author of many films that still have the power to move their audiences.
