Summary

We love ghost stories here at Wildside Press—witness the fact that we have now now reached our eighth volume in this series. Very few other genres are so versatile and enduring as tales of the supernatural. Ghosts can (and have) appeared in literature for thousands of years, in all countries and continents (and times past, present, and future) throughout the world. But the Victorian era particularly seemed to embrace ghost stories, and that’s when Christmas ghost tales became not just a staple of literature, but a requirement. Seemingly all British fiction magazines (and many newspapers) had to publish at least one ghostly tale in the month of December.Proving that the ghost story tradition is strong to the present day, we have an original story from Phyllis Ann Karr (author of the Frostflower and Thorn series), plus two drawn from Alfred Hitchcock’s Mystery Magazine (which strayed a little more into the fantastic and horrific in the 1960s that it does today), plus another modern story by Wallace West, who is best known as a science fiction writer. Good stuff. Here is the complete lineup:

UNSEEN—UNFEARED, by Francis Stevens

RUNNING WOLF, by Algernon Blackwood

Dive into the heart of cosmic horror with H.P. Lovecraft's seminal work, "The Call of Cthulhu." This masterful tale weaves together the mysterious, the terrifying, and the utterly alien, introducing readers to the world of the Great Old Ones, ancient beings of immense power and inscrutable motives. Follow the journey of Francis Wayland Thurston, as he uncovers clues leading to the true nature of the universe and the lurking horror of Cthulhu, asleep in the sunken city of R'lyeh. Lovecraft's richly detailed narrative crafts a universe where the bounds of reality are stretched, and the fragile psyche of humanity is laid bare against the backdrop of the incomprehensible. "The Call of Cthulhu" is not just a story; it's an experience, a chilling descent into the darkness that dwells beyond the veil of human understanding.

Would you dance for a statue? What if he woke and claimed you?

I've got big dreams of a career on the stage. Unfortunately dreams don't pay the bills. Working as an exotic dancer for a mysterious monster client sure beats being groped by some of the sleazy humans I've danced for.

Performing alone on a rooftop for a statue sounds strange, sure. Then the statue comes alive and turns into a huge, sweet protective gargoyle. My dance frees William from his rocky prison, but he tells me if I don’t stop, he'll have no choice but to claim me forever. Beneath the rough, stony exterior, my powerful gargoyle mate has a tender heart. But he's holding back.

How can I convince him he's worthy? Will he still love me when he realizes how much trouble I am?

    Contains mature themes.
